My mother introduced me to a trio of gorgeous women. The one with silvery-white hair and pale blue eyes was Aurora, another with amethyst-tinged dark hair and reddish-brown ochre skin was Elle, and the third with tawny hair, bright green eyes, and golden skin as Marietta.
They each greeted me with a cool tone and neutral smile, gazing at me with a wary assessment. Was their unfriendly vibe because I was a stranger they didn’t know if they could trust—the same caution as the New Orleans pod? Or more competition for the two men present? Either way, it didn’t faze me. I’d faced icier bitches in my life.
My mother then led me to a man who was tall, broad, and blond. “This is Max.” She rubbed her hand on his upper arm and gazed at him with adoration. He stared at her, appearing enamored, but he managed to tear his gaze away to greet me with a smile that vanished by the time it reached his eyes.
"Welcome, Gianna. We're glad you came."
"Thanks. What is this anyway? What's going on here?"
"It’s just a get together," my mother said.
"Are they all sirens?" I asked her in a low tone.
"No," she replied with a slight smile. "Just the females."
"Come, meet my son,” Max said.
Max and my mother continued with introductions before leading me to a man with hair of striking gold like Max. With his high cheekbones and flawless skin, he was almost too beautiful to be real.
"Gianna, this is my son, Jakob."
With how scrumptious he looked, I should have been itching to climb him. My conversation with Sebastian that morning returned. We’d agreed to be exclusive for now. Would it mean I’d be deprived of all sorts of yummy prospects like Jakob? Was that a mistake?
"Hi, there, Gianna," Jakob said in a smooth, velvety tone.
It was nothing like Sebastian’s rich baritone that make me all tingly, especially when he spoke dirty.
"Hi.”
"We'll let you two chat," my mother said.
That was weird. Why was she setting me up with this guy? Still, he was easy on the eyes and if he had any more answers than my mother, so be it.
She walked away with Max, and they spoke in low murmurs. The other sirens glanced over and whispered among themselves.
“You grew up here?” Jakob asked.
“I did. I just met my mother recently.” I cocked my head. “Have you known her long?”
“No. Just in the last two or three months.”
I glanced around and noted the food and drinks on display on a table. Neither my mother nor Jakob offered me any. How different from Sebastian. He would have insisted I had a full plate by now.
What did I care? I needed to stop with the comparisons. I didn’t need a man to feed me. I could take care of myself.
“I’m guessing your father and my mother are together,” I pointed out.
“For now,” Jakob said.
Temporary lovers. Was that the way of the siren? It was how I’d lived for many years now, avoiding commitment. It was another reason that I should not be thinking of anything progressing with Sebastian.
“Are you a supe?” I asked him.
“I wouldn’t be here if I wasn’t,” he replied with a sly grin.
Not very informative. He admitted that he wasn’t human but hadn’t revealed anything else. Maybe he wasn’t comfortable around me yet to reveal much about himself. After all, we’d just met, and he didn’t know if he could trust me. If my mother and the other sirens were with them, they had to be compatible on some level.
“Meaning you’re…” I prompted with a wave of my hand.
