“I plan to.” Stealing a glance back at the vampire, who had parked behind us, I smiled.
“Good luck.” Gianna beamed like a proud mama and then closed the car door.
I drove back to the house with Diego following. Despite what I’d said, it was comforting to have him there. When was the last time someone looked out for me like this?
Yes, I did want to give us a chance. Sure, we had all sorts of obstacles to deal with since only one of us was immortal, but after what we’d faced tonight, what did we have to lose?
Diego
Once I parked behind Nova, I rushed over to her. The torment of seeing her threatened earlier haunted me, and all I wanted to do was ensure she was safe.
I slung my arm around her waist. “How about we go inside and decompress with some Monty Python?”
She turned and glanced up at me. “That sounds like a great idea. But I have a better suggestion of what we can do first.” She leaned onto her tiptoes and kissed me.
I cupped her face and responded with more intensity. After almost losing her tonight, I couldn’t think of anything I wanted more than being alone with her to show her what she meant to me.
After we broke apart, I said, “One question, your bed or mine?”
She tipped her head and gave me a coquettish smile. “Both?”
Even with my speed, I couldn’t move quickly enough. We entered my side of the house, and Shadow was all over us, meowing and rubbing against our legs as if he’d sensed something was wrong tonight. Once we gave him enough chin rubs to satisfy his short need for human contact, he sauntered away.
We started in her room in case the guys were home, and we were loud, but once we were naked, ended up staying there. I kissed her everywhere, overcome with almost losing her earlier, and desperate to feel her body burn with life.
After we made up with hot, sweaty, we-almost-died-tonight sex, we lay panting side-by-side. I ran my hand over the curves of her body.
“I’m so grateful to you for what you did tonight, Diego.” Her eyes glistened. “I don’t want to imagine what would have happened if you hadn’t.” Her bottom lip trembled.
I stroked her cheek as if I could brush her fears away. “Don’t think about it because it didn’t happen.” I gulped before I admitted, “I’m here for you, Nova. Even after you go back to New York, you can call me whenever you need someone.”
It felt so good to care for another person again. Maybe it was corny, but I’d been so caught up in self-hatred and despair that this new mind shift gave me a fresh lifeline.
“I’ve been thinking about that.” Her lips tightened. “Leaving.”
My gut fell to the floorboards. Why did I ruin the moment by bringing up her departure?
“What I mean is that I’ve been thinking more about returning to New York and realized I don’t want to.” She gestured with an open palm. “I’ve been able to do my job here, so there’s no reason they shouldn’t let me continue doing so. And if they don’t, I’ll find another job.”
“They’d be foolish to let you go.” I stroked her soft cheek. “I’m not crazy enough to do that.”
“Good, because I have no intention of leaving. Everything I need is here. Everyone I want to be near is here.” She gazed at me with warmth. “Especially you.”
My eyes widened. To make sure I wasn’t imagining things, I had to confirm it. “You want to stay here in Salem?”
“I do.” Her lips twitched into a smile. “Hope you don’t mind me moving into the house for good.”
We stared into each other’s eyes, and I traced my fingers over her soft cheek. All the fears I’d had about losing her vanished. Sure we had plenty of other obstacles to face to make a relationship work, but we made it through the most difficult one—taking this step to be together.
“It sounds like you even have a job offer at the Network,” I said.
She laughed. “I still can’t believe that. I mean, we’re talking about me, someone who thought she had zero talent as a witch until recently.”
“You’re incredible, Nova. With magic or not. I think you’re amazing.” I sat up. “Hold on, I have something for you. I’ll be right back.”
Nova
While Diego went to get something from his room, I relaxed on the bed to recover. Hot, sweaty, makeup sex had left me breathless. With moves like that, I’d be shouting more, more, more in no time.
