Shit. She shouldn’t be going anywhere by herself. All the reasons I told myself why I’d be better off without her vanished. Instincts propelled me to sprint down the stairs and out the front door. I made it outside just as she pulled away.

Dammit, now what? I could jump in my car and follow her. That wouldn’t go over well, not after last night.

Yet, the alternative would be worse if she was killed.

Screw it. I had to follow her and see if she was okay. Even if she cursed me through the end of my immortal life.

Chapter 15

Diego

Ijumped into my car and sped to catch up to Nova. “Come on, come on,” I declared to the person in front of me as I banged my hand on the steering wheel.

I shouldn’t have brooded all day. After we’d cooled off, I should have gone over to her place and done something to make her laugh. Maybe toss her the killer bunny stuffed animal.

I snorted. Wow, what a genius I was—did I really think throwing a stuffed animal covered in fake blood at her would be something she’d think was funny? No, more likely she’d think I was some deranged stalker.

Even my attempt at humor to lighten things up had a dark side.

Finally, I passed the driver. Once I caught up to Nova’s car, I slowed down. She couldn’t know I was following her. It would make the situation between us so much worse.

While I trailed her, I remained as far back as possible. The traffic was sparse this late at night. She headed down to Salem Willows and pulled over. I turned my lights off before I parked. She scanned the area. Fortunately, I’d turned the lights off just in time, or she would have spotted me.

She held something in her hands. Even with my vampire sight, I couldn’t make out what it was. Then she headed into the park. Why would she do that? Was she out of her mind?

I had to go after her. Aiming for stealth as I slipped into the park, I felt like some creepy prowler. The moon shone down through the branches of the trees, which loomed like dangling arms ready to reach out and grab me. I didn’t like this situation, not one bit.

Although I couldn’t see Nova, her scent remained. It was fresh. Up ahead, footsteps crunched over twigs and fallen leaves. That was the problem with walking here. I stepped on grass as much as possible to silence my approach.

The muffled sound of voices rose. It was Nova and a man.

Shit.

Who the hell would she meet out here?

I had a sinking feeling I knew who it was, and hoped like hell I was wrong.

Nova

My hands were clammy. I did not want to walk into the darkness alone. But if Gianna was in there, I had to do it.

Forcing one foot in front of the other, my heart galloped as I stepped in between the willow trees. My breath came in pants, the wisps were visible before me in the cool night.

When I spotted Gianna, I rushed forward. That asshole Andre had tied her to the trunk of a tree.

“Gianna!” I called out. “Are you okay?

“Don’t do it, Nova,” she implored. “Don’t give him anything.”

“Quiet,” Andre barked and pointed at her.

She snapped her head back and her eyes widened, but she didn’t say a word.

“What did you do to her?” I demanded.

“You brought the book,” he replied, ignoring my question. “Smart choice.” He reached out. “Hand it over.”

“Untie her first.”
