“What?” I stared at him in surprise.

“I’ll come with you,” he declared. “To make sure you get home safely.”

“Brilliant.” Zoe said. “You can keep me abreast of the situation. If this guy shows up, text me.” She glanced at her phone and frowned. “I’ve got to go.” She stood. With her short stature, it didn’t give her much more height from when she was sitting. “We’ll talk tomorrow.”

After Zoe left, I said, “I should sign up for the event.” With a groan I added, “If Gianna hasn’t done so already.” With a guilty grin, I added, “Diego, I was not planning to attend.”

He rolled his shoulder, avoiding eye contact. “Why not? You’re free to do what you want.”

True. We had no obligations or commitments to each other. “Okay. I’ll sign up.”

When I went to talk to the bartender, Rula, she looked into the registration on a laptop. “You’re already on the list.”

Ooh, if I could access the names, maybe I could send it to Zoe since she’d dashed out before talking to anyone. “Can I see who else is registered?”

Rula’s lips tightened. “No.”

I bit my lip. How could I get her to reveal the info to me? “I need it to help Gianna out.” Technically, that was true.”

“No can do.” Rula wiped some glass rings from the bar. “I’m not sharing it unless I hear it from the boss herself.”

Ugh. Gianna couldn’t provide that info if she was in trouble. I stifled a groan. “Can I have the details about tomorrow then?”

Rula narrowed her gaze. “You should have received a confirmation email.”

I prickled under her scrutiny. Jeez, I was trying to help out her boss. “Gianna signed me up.” I shrugged. “Maybe she used her email and meant to forward it to me.”

After sizing me up some more, Rula forwarded the email to me. Geez, she was tough. But at least I walked away with more info to carry out the plan.

As I madelunch the next day, the guys were in the living room. Diego filled him in on the plan and then asked me what time the event started that night.

I opened the email with the registration info. “Eight.” While scanning through the details, my gaze stopped on something. “Oh, wait, that won’t work.”

“What won’t?” he asked.

“You watching out for me. The club is closed to the public during the event. Only those who are registered will be allowed in.”

“Even better.” Sebastian clapped Diego on his back and smiled. “Diego will need to register.”

“No way.” Diego shook his head. “I don’t need to do that.”

“You have to,” Sebastian protested. “How else are you going to watch out for Nova?”

“I can stay on watch outside,” Diego replied. “You know I hate those kind of forced conversations.”

“Terrible idea,” Lucas countered. “What if she gets in troubleinsidethe club?”

“You need to sign up.” Sebastian raised a hand palms-up. “Besides, it will be good for you. “

Diego replied with a doubtful grunt.

“How so?” I asked.

“He can get out and meet people.” He faced Diego. “While you’re being all brave looking out for Nova and helping find her friend, you might even meet someone special.”

Diego and I exchanged a glance and then quickly broke eye contact.

“Wait a minute.” Sebastian stared from one of us to the other. “Is something going on here?”
