Our gazes locked, and I had to swallow. Nova did something to me that knocked me off-kilter. This beautiful witch enchanted me.
When her phone vibrated, Nova broke eye contact and answered it. Less than a minute passed before she ended the call.
“That was Colleen. A detective from the Network is going to come here to talk to us.” Nova smoothed out her outfit and glanced at the door. “Let’s grab a booth.”
Ah, we were back to business. The spell was broken, and with it, so was the fantasy of taking Nova home with me tonight.
Nova
Zoe, the detective from the Salem Supernatural Network stood at barely five feet tall. When I glanced at the slight points to her ears that poked through her red hair, I guessed why.
“You can see them?” she asked.
Shit, I’d been caught staring. “Ah, sorry.”
“No reason to be. Just wondering since most can’t. Elves disguise our ears with magic so we look more human.”
I was keenly aware of Diego’s quiet presence beside me. His thighs and upper body touched mine. I found it soothing, protective—and something more. But now wasn’t the time to think of anything sensual, so I shoved the awareness aside.
“Tell me about your friend,” Zoe said.
I repeated what I’d told Diego earlier and added, “Gianna mentioned this guy she was talking to. She was trying to get me to meet up with him at a speed dating event here tomorrow.”
Diego stiffened at my side. Although I felt guilty for bringing it up after what had gone on between us, I thought it important to tell the detective. “He was one of the last people seen talking to her.”
He’d also overheard her talking to me about my family’s book. I hadn’t told Diego yet, and I kept it mum now. Since I was tasked to protect this book, I shouldn’t go around announcing its existence.
“What do you know about him?” Zoe asked.
I shook my head. “Not much. She mentioned him having dark hair and green eyes.” Avoiding Diego’s probing stare, I added, “And a good body.”
“Sounds like he’s the only lead we have at the moment,” Zoe said. “I’ll see if I can get a list of who registered and come tomorrow to question him.”
“I should come, too,” I piped up.
“What?” Diego asked.
The surprised glance on Zoe’s face mirrored his.
“Because he might talk to me. After all, Gianna mentioned me being in town and attending the event.” I turned to Diego. “Not that I’d agreed to sign up.” Turning back to Zoe, I added, “It’s the least I can do to help find her.”
“Whoa.” Diego raised his hands. “That sounds like a terrible idea. You’re putting yourself out there as bait.”
“Right,” Zoe said. “Not only have witches been killed, but we’ve been chasing crimes throughout the city.”
“I think that’s even more of a reason for me to get involved to help save Gianna,” I said.
Zoe studied me. “With Gianna not being a witch, it’s probably unrelated, but I suppose it doesn’t hurt to see if you can find anything out.” She tipped her head. “If he shows up.”
“It could be dangerous,” Diego protested.
I motioned through the club. “I wouldn’t be alone. I’d be in a club full of people.”
“But none of them would be looking out for you in case something goes wrong,” Diego added.
That was true, but I was used to that being the case.
Diego shook his head. “I can’t let you take this on yourself.”
