While absently flipping through a display of black dresses, I addressed Gianna, “Tomorrow is going to be weird.”
“Why?” she replied.
“We’re supposed to be pretending, but after that kiss…” I shook my head. Yes, I’d definitely complicated matters by kissing Diego. It was better to shuck off any ideas of anything more.
“This one,” Gianna declared as she pulled a dress off the rack. It was a royal blue dress with spaghetti straps and a plunging neckline.
“I don’t have the boobs to pull that off.” I gestured at her. “We don’t all have impressive racks like you.”
She felt one of the bra cups. “Don’t worry, it has some pads to enhance the girls. You won’t even need to wear a strapless bra.”
The dress was form fitting at the bodice and flared out with multiple chiffon like layers cut at various lengths at the bottom.
“Try it on.” She handed it over. “It would look perfect with your figure.”
That was the problem with me and shopping. Being on the petite side made it tough to find clothes that fit well. Dresses had to fit in a precise way to keep me from looking like a little girl playing dress up with her mom’s clothes.
Gianna shooed me toward the dressing rooms. “Go, I can’t wait to see it.”
I went and tried it on, turning in one direction and then the other as I appraised the effect in the multiple mirrors. The chiffon layers swished around my legs as I twirled. I had to admit, Gianna nailed it. It was flattering from shoulders to shins, and the bra cups definitely drew attention to my breasts, displaying them to the point of almost overselling. Oh, well. Sex sells.
When I opened the door, Gianna smiled in triumph. “We have a winner.” She clapped her hands. “Pleasetell me you like it. It looks amazing on you.”
“I like it,” I agreed, but then reassessed its suitability for the ball. “Should I add something to make it more fitting for Halloween?”
“We’ll stop by the Halloween store and slap on a pair of wings to make you a fairy.” She led me to the register. “Let’s get lunch at the food court. I’m starving.”
We picked up panini at a cafe. While we ate, I said, “I wish you were going tomorrow. It would be far more fun with you there.”
“Of course it would be. But Halloween is one of our best nights, so I need to be at the club.” She flashed the mischievous grin. “What I would give to see you and Diego pretending to be together in front of this vamp. Nowthatwould be a show indeed.” She took a bite of her sandwich.
Hell, I hoped not. The last thing I wanted was to make a spectacle out of us both.
“Next stop, a sexy pair of shoes,” Gianna declared.
“I don’t do well in heels,” I protested.
“That’s because you haven’t found the right pair.” She gave me a sage nod. “Don’t worry, you’re with me. If there’s one thing I know as to what turns on a man, it’s what turns on a woman—shoes.”
I laughed. That definitely wasn’t the case with me. “Then I might be frigid.”
Forty-five minutes later, Gianna dispelled that theory when she found a pair of strappy silver heels that were sexy while also comfortable. I even managed to walk in them without stumbling.
She shrugged with false modesty. “What can I say, it’s a gift.”
Diego
“I can’t believe you’re making me do this,” I told Sebastian as I walked by the bathroom.
He had the door open as he tidied his beard, something he did daily as part of his manscaping routine, which he insisted was a bitch to keep up with due to his wolf nature.
Sebastian rolled his eyes. “We’re not going to go through this again. Just man up and do it.”
I scowled before heading into my room to change. Tonight could be uncomfortable. While I searched for a suitable outfit, I questioned if Nova would even come. Had we made things too uncomfortable with that brief kiss?
Damn, I wished we could undo it, yet also fantasized about taking it further. No wonder I was so screwed up—my brain couldn’t even settle on what it wanted.
After I found a decent pair of black slacks and button-down shirt, I took a shower and then dressed. When I walked to the stairs, I scoped the situation below. Nova was there. Lucas and Sebastian told her she looked great and asked her to spin around. She did so, twirling her dress. A set of white shimmery wings rested on her back. A growl rumbled in my chest.
