“I think he’s done a lot of that already.” Tuesday the vampire had melted back into the shadows, so it was like hearing the darkness speak.
“Now that we’re here, living among humans, I’ve reformed.” Did I always sound so stiff, so formal?
Delilah laughed. I could hear Tuesday laughing.
“Sure. All men say that.” Delilah had a hard time getting the words out between her laughing.
I crossed my arms, sighed a loud sigh of the massively put upon, and waited.
“Fine, fine. You’re reformed. Who’s the lucky lady?”
“Perhaps I don’t want to share.”
“I know a lot of the women in this town.”
Why did that sound like a threat? “She works at Big Pete’s.”
“Oh.” Delilah leaned back, clasping her hands in front of her again. “That means it’s either Janny or Roxy.”
“It has to be Janny. I’d bet on it. Roxy Kincaid is so unavailable. Even to you.” The shadows spoke.
“No bet here. I one-hundred percent agree.” Delilah looked at me. “No wonder you’re wandering around all lost. You don’t stand a chance with Roxy.”
“Godly shit or not.” The laughter was barely contained from the shadows.
Did the vampire have to put her oar in at every turn?
And what did that mean? Roxy was unavailable? Was she involved with another? I wanted to know. “What do you mean, she’s unavailable?”
“That’s what it looks like when you take candy from the baby, Delilah. Look at that expression.” Tuesday still hadn’t come out of the shadows.
Shit.
“You really want to know?” Delilah asked.
“I really do.”
“Then ask Roxy.”
“What?”
“It’s not our tale to tell.” That was from Tuesday. “We don’t spill the secrets of others.”
That was an honorable practice, even if I wasn’t going to tell them. But enough was enough.
“Thank you.” I got up. “Thank you for the threats, the laughter, and this interesting getting-to-know-you session. I’ll be on my way.”
“You need to spend time with her. Not doing what you want, or plotting against her virtue, but just being with her.” Delilah’s words hit me like an axe over the head. “I mean, if you even want to have a chance at a chance.”
“What?”
“He is so surprised.” She looked toward the shadows where the vampire hid.
“I’m not.” It was clear Tuesday the vampire was not my fan.
“I’m listening.” I stopped my indignant exit.
“It wouldn’t hurt you to go to the library, either.”
