I will heal us, Pixie said.
Eirene’s wolf was hurting as much as she was and wanted to do her part.Thank you, Pixie. We will rest for one minute, then shift. Starting now, the only thing I care about is saving Corbin and Ares.
I agree.
If Eirene were discovered to have joined up with a lone wolf, SCIS would come for her. Leszek might not be able to stop them. Worse yet, Leszek would use that scandal to turn the courts and the fans against her unless she handed him her future.
She’d never find her father’s killer.
Nothing mattered more to her than Corbin’s freedom.
What she had in mind would likely blow up in her face, but she was done playing defense.
Corbin and Ares had no one else but her and Pixie.
Chapter 27
Struggling to breathe and stay conscious, Corbin rolled his head until he could look out over the water.
Eirene surfaced halfway across. She’d be safe.
He and Ares would never know what the word safe meant ever again, but they had saved their mates.
“Chain the dog and take him to the van,” Vlad ordered. He stepped closer, knowing from experience that Corbin would be in no shape to hurt a fly for another hour. “When I find your woman, I will show you what I do to female shifters who try to defy me. I will enjoy watching her beg to be killed.”
The three men put a chain around Corbin’s neck and connected it to where his hands and feet had been cuffed.
I’m sorry, Ares. I hate that this is happening to you.Corbin was sick over Ares finally facing his darkest fear and coming out on the other side not as the wolf he’d known as a child, but a much greater version.I am so proud of what you did in the water and how you fought that bear. I would never want another wolf.
Ares made a pitiful moan.Want Pixie.
I know. I want Eirene, too, but we did the right thing by getting them out of here. I never want Vlad to touch either of our mates.
Vlad’s men were dragging Corbin through the woods, letting his head bang against tree trunks. He didn’t care about blood oozing from his head or low bushes or broken branches digging long cuts into his body. Not after being hit twice with Vlad’s remote control then kicked around by his men.
That was merely a taste of how much worse it would be now that Vlad had no desire to use Corbin and Ares as part of his operation.
When Ares spoke again, he sounded vicious. We fight our way out.
Corbin would not try to change his wolf’s mind. Ares knew fighting would end in their deaths. His wolf understood the raw pain of having what he wanted within his grasp, only to lose it as much as Corbin did.
We will fight.
Chapter 28
Stars flew through Corbin’s vision during lucid times before he’d eventually black out. Neurological damage from Vlad’s sadistic beatings. He peeked through the slit in one swollen eye past the tiny lights flickering through his vision to determine if it was daylight or nighttime. The barn door stayed open continuously.
He might have been here three days or more. He couldn’t say for sure.
After flashing a permit showing they had captured a rogue wolf shifter and were delivering it to Canada’s version of SCIS, Vlad’s men drove off with no one thinking twice to check their story.
They drove for an hour before taking a dirt road that went on forever. Then the van entered the yard of a farmhouse with an aging barn. They’d killed the elderly human couple living here.
Vlad arrived right behind them, warning his men to be vigilant because he needed time to replace the bear before they departed this continent.
One of the guards confirmed their contact in Canada had found this location for them because the couple that had lived here for over twenty years had stayed away from others. They basically lived off the grid, making this an ideal place to wait.
Two of Vlad’s men had dragged Corbin into the barn before one left to meet with the person supplying Vlad’s replacement shifter. Having three guards gave Vlad two to watch his back while one grabbed a battle nap.
