They stayed wrapped up together under the shower until she could lift her arms to his shoulders and bring her face up to his. She kissed his chin and cheeks then his mouth. His tongue darted in to play with hers.
His hands massaged her bottom and moved too close to the hot zone.
“I vote we grab some rest and ... who knows what might happen.” She gave him a cheeky grin.
His eyes glistened with happiness. “I’m going to enjoy keeping that smile on your face.”
This man held the power over her happiness. The young boy who offered her friendship so long ago had grown into an exceptional man.
Finding him again was a gift she could not squander because she’d never want another man as her mate.
Hopefully, one day, Corbin would want that too. In the meantime, she’d do her best to keep that contented look on his face.
She could easily love Corbin, but trust meant everything to her. She had never discovered it with any other man, but she trusted Corbin with her entire being.
It dawned on her that as a shifter she didn’t have to worry about diseases, but she did have a responsibility as a female shifter to let a man know if she was in heat.
“I should have let you know first, but I’m not in heat,” she said, getting that off her chest. She had to be honest with him for Corbin to gain trust in her.
“I stayed away from female shifters in heat, but to be honest ... I never gave it a thought.” His throat moved as he swallowed, then finished, “We’ve had a tough time getting together, but now that I know everything that happened, I trust you. You’re even prettier than you were as a young girl, which kept me tongue-tied. That’s why I wrote a note.” He laughed. “I spent time learning to whittle. I’m not good at it, but I wanted to give you something that was mine alone.”
Her womb voted him the greatest man on earth. “I have that wolf in a safe to ensure nothing ever happens to it. I’d like to give you a gift, but I’m not good at making things.” She laid her head on his shoulder.
“In that case, I’d love to hear you sing sometime.”
She raised her head. Her lips parted. “You’ve never heard me sing?”
“No. I heard about it in school, but I was never in the right place at the right time. Once the Romanian got me, I had no access to televisions or radios. We stayed off the grid.”
Her heart tapped at a jubilant pace. “Let’s get some rest and warm up my vocal cords in the morning. Then I’ll give you a private concert.”
“I can’t wait.” He turned off the shower and stepped out to snag a thick towel for her and another for him.
She dried off and toweled her hair. It wouldn’t be event-ready when she woke up, but she didn’t care. Putting on a look was for fans, not Corbin.
When they made it to the bedroom, he yanked the cover back and pulled her down with him, then rolled onto his side. She snuggled back against him, eliciting an exaggerated painful sound that had her laughing until he eased her back to spoon against his body.
He whipped the covers over them. “Is an alarm set?”
“Yes. If anyone opens a door or tries to get in a window, it will activate a shrieking alarm even if it’s the building owner. They meant it when they said I would be safe here.”
“Good. I normally sleep light, but ... woman, you wore me out.”
“Don’t worry. I’ll protect you.”
He pinched her butt, and she laughed louder.
Outside this building, she had a world of problems, but tonight she would not care. Together, they’d figure out their lives going forward. She soaked up the heat of his body and fell deep asleep.
Chapter 19
Towel drying his hair after an early morning shower, Corbin strolled over to where he’d deposited a small duffel bag filled with the few belongings he’d brought up from his bike after waking. Eirene said she had stored casual clothes and shoes here to prevent having to visit her apartment first when she needed a couple hours of downtime.
Last night, Eirene had teased that she’d keep him safe. Sixteen seconds later, she’d fallen sound asleep. He chuckled over his thoroughly loved woman, then kept her next to him for the best night of sleep he’d had in years.
She whispered words to a song in her sleep. He’d never heard anything so charming.
He could hear her warming up her voice in the shower. He was learning so many things about her like the fact that she wanted to be loved at all hours. She’d awakened early this morning and poked him.
