Chapter 27

Hallene struggled tomove her legs and fought the pressure holding her down.
“Wake the fuck up, Hailey!” whispered at her.
She heaved hard breaths. What was going on?
When her vision cleared, she could make out her surroundings from a nightlight in the bathroom. Her breath came out in rapid bursts.
She stared up into Sam’s worried face.
He had her arms clamped down and his body holding her in place. What was happening? He wasn’t trying to take advantage of her, just hold her in place. Her eyes tracked from wide shoulders and biceps pumped with muscle down his chest to where an impressive eight-pack then the rest of him was pinned against her.
And between her legs.
He was hard, too.
She needed her brain rattled to shake loose some survival skills. All she could think was that he held her down. Lifting her gaze to his, she warned. “Get. Off. Me.”
He didn’t move. “I will if you’ll stop trying to kill me.”
She blinked.Killhim? What was he talking about? She started to speak but nothing that made sense came to mind.
He watched her as one would a panicked animal. “I’m guessing you were in a nightmare, but you were choking me. When I tried to pry your fingers loose, you started fighting back. I was doing all I could to not hurt you. I just want to know for sure you’re awake all the way.”
Breathing slowly to calm down, she considered that she hadn’t slept with a man in two years. She’d wakened more than once with the bed torn apart from nightmares of trying to save a child from a monster.
Her latest nightmare starring Phoebe had been repeated more than once this past week.
“I’m awake,” she breathed out, feeling bad about snapping at him.
Sam’s hands loosened on her wrists. He sat up and rolled away with a towel around his waist. Then he lifted her back and shoved a pillow behind her plus he pulled what he could tug loose of the sheet over her.
Once again, he’d shown her respect in a vulnerable situation.
While she scooted higher and reached under the sheet to pull the T-shirt down, he got out of bed and walked into the bathroom. When he came back, he had a plastic cup of water for her.
