Her instincts were warning her that he was being too accommodating.

Had he called his team after all to have them follow?

The fact that Leclair addressed her concern about him calling his people did not prove he hadn’t done just that. His team could be following them at this very minute.

If they interfered or tried to stop her, Leclair and his men would make a huge mistake. She didn’t want to harm anyone, but that would not stop her from taking down anyone who stepped between her and finding Phoebe.

She might not trust Leclair but ... she liked him. Liked the man who had not hesitated to stop a man from abusing a young woman. Liked his smile when he showed a real one.

Closing her eyes, she tried to quiet her mind, but she feared Leclair would disappoint her.

Chapter 20

Streetlights lit upthe four lanes of downtown Elizabeth, New York, a peaceful place with most of the business crowd gone by eight at night. Sam had two miles to go before they reached the hotel the navigation system squawked about being on the right ahead.

He’d had four hours to think of ways to fix this unauthorized action when he faced Nitro at some point. Four hours. He should have been able to come up with a plan for world peace with all the mental crunching he’d done in that much time.

How much longer could he go along without knowing all of Hailey’s intel? At some point, he had to make a choice to stick this out or bail on her for any hope of a future with Logan and his teams.

Being here wasn’t his fault.

That argument would not matter.

Just like everyone on his FALCA team, he could evade Hailey and get a message to Nitro. He could have talked someone out of their phone when he’d run into the large restroom at the gas station. He’d stood out of the heavy foot traffic while debating his decision to call or not before making a move.

Calling Nitro would mean his team coming in and taking over this operation. They’d expect Hailey to share all she knew.

She would fight them the whole way.

She would not listen to another word Sam said at that point or share one snippet of intel.
