Angel asked, “What about her tag?”

Moose rewound the video to right before she pulled in. She hadn’t gone straight in so even the second camera across the street in a different tree did not have a clear shot. “We may not get the tag number and location until daylight or when she leaves.”

Nitro felt a twitch, the kind he got when something was off. Not that Sam didn’t deserve to spend some time with a willing female, but ... something didn’t feel right about this.

Logan had scrubbed Sam’s existence from the point of Sam starting with the HAMR Brotherhood back to his birth certificate. There should be nothing about the woman he called his aunt, or her inn, tied to Sam.

Nitro wouldn’t have dropped Sam at Angela’s place and put her at risk. He’d felt Sam would heal in a safe place, somewhere he could think about his future. The cameras they’d installed were SOP for keeping an eye on any of their team during downtime.

Sam and Moose were tight, yet Moose knew nothing about this woman. Where had she come from if she wasn’t onhisradar?

Angel could have fifty women they’d never know about, and he’d likely forgotten half of them, but Sam’s nickname of Partyman had been a poke at how he didn’t hang out in bars. Sam had made it clear he had zero plans to ever get serious with any woman while he ran ops with the team because his background had scarred him.

He wasn’t one to pick up a woman and take her home. Not after his sister left a party with the wrong man and didn’t survive. That was the problem with stopping Sam from trying to save every female he perceived as being in trouble.

Nitro said, “Set up the third computer. I’ll monitor it until Blade gets back. If anything pings in the wrong way for me, we’ll make a visit.”

Chapter 16

Hallene walked pastSam, entering his bedroom. She dropped her heavy shoulder bag on the chair next to a window.

The door snapped shut behind her and a lamp clicked on. “You could have given me a heads-up on thisplanof yours.”

She swung around. “You played it well. Had you known in advance, you might have overacted or tried to signal your team. I saved you from that mistake.”

“How generous of you.”

Was he going to snipe at her every minute? She felt bad enough for threatening Angela, who must be important to Sam based on the way he reacted. Hallene couldn’t admit that Angela and this community would be safe and expect Sam to stick with her. “Would you prefer the alternative of this falling apart before we get started?”

Grumbling under his breath, he moved his hand in a rolling motion. “Moving along, what’s your name or whatever you want me to call you?”

“Hailey.” Close enough to her name to get a natural reaction when he said it. Even if he snarled when he called her, which seemed to be his only mood. They had to play this role completely or his team would be alerted and interfere.

She would not allow him or anyone else to put Phoebe in more danger than she was. “I am giving you a chance to find your kidnapped person. Can you not step up and work with me?”
