Chapter 45

––––––––

Sam dropped to hisknees, still holding the gun on Turner who stared at him as if shocked anyone would shoot him. He wouldn’t die from the wrist wound, but neither would he be able to hold a gun again any time soon.

“Sam!” Hallene scrambled around the desk.

“Stay down, hon. There’s a sniper trying to kill you.”

She didn’t stop, just kept coming on her hands and knees. When she reached him, tears poured down her face. “How bad is it?”

“He barely grazed my side.” But Sam’s shoulder would hurt like a bitch until someone popped it back into the socket.

She pulled up his bloody shirt. “That’s not a graze, dammit.”

“I’ll live.”

Footsteps pounded toward them. The building elevator had been groaning its way up.

She jerked her head around and moved in front of Sam.

Hell, he loved this woman even if she did crazy things like that. “It’s okay, Hallene. That’s my team.”

Nitro strolled in with his weapon drawn, took in the situation, and started directing everyone. He had Blade and two men Sam didn’t know.

Sam said, “What about the sniper?”

One of the men he didn’t recognize who had to be from ULFBR team said, “Our guy took him out.”

“Thanks.” Sam didn’t ask names. They would not share HAMR Brotherhood names in front of an enemy.

Putting his weapon down, Sam reached around Hallene’s shoulders with his right arm and tugged her back.

Hallene asked, “What about Phoebe?”

Sam held his breath. He’d trusted his people to keep that girl safe no matter what came after her.

Nitro paused in issuing orders to calmly answer her question. “She’s fine. Our man took her to a place where we had surveillance. When someone showed up who was not one of ours, he was neutralized.”

Her shoulders slumped and she scooted next to Sam, then she surged forward again. “There’s another way to activate the missile in the UK. A man named Kovac has it.”

Nodding, Blade said, “We know. Once we located Turner’s phone, our people heard what he planned. You did terrific getting that out of him. Our boss has been on standby in the UK. He took care of Kovac. Law enforcement in Pennsylvania also has Turner’s double. He’s bleeding badly, but he’ll survive.”

Relief must have swamped Hallene because she never let her control slip in front of others, but she buried her face against Sam’s good shoulder and cried. He felt the same overwhelming relief at holding her close.

The only thing in his world that mattered now was holding onto her. He wanted to sit here for as long as she needed. His heart would never get over seeing her dodging a sniper’s shot.
