“Here.” Hallene handed her ring to him. “Do you have a plan?”

“More like an idea at this point. I’m hoping my team has reached this area to search. If so, they’ll notice the light. He asked Phoebe, “Any chance you know which way the sun rises and sets here?”

Pointing at a high window to the right of Sam, she said, “Was dark over there when I got ’ere but some light in the windows behind me.”

“Excellent.” He caught her surprised smile at his compliment and aimed the LED for the window he designated as east, turning it off and on in a series of Morse Code flashes.

“How will they know to watch that window?” Hallene asked.

“I’m doing this in the window facing east then also in the one facing west. We’re always brainstorming different scenarios for escaping somewhere and for finding a captured team member. The rule is that when hunting someone at night in an urban area, we pick those windows if more than one faces a different way.” He flipped around, sending the same message to the west-facing windows.

After a pause, he repeated the process.

Hallene followed his head turns. “Is it Morse Code?”

Sam answered, “Yes. I’m keeping it short. SOS and the number one.”

“One what?”

“One guard, but they won’t blow the door without knowing where we are and if any other captives are at risk.”

After repeating the message five times, something hit the west-facing window. Sam stopped and watched.

A light flashed from outside the window.

Hell, yeah. He grinned. “That’s my people.”

“Was that light a drone?” Phoebe asked, sounding surprised at what was happening.

“Yep. They’re letting me know they found me.”

His team would rescue them, which meant Phoebe and Hallene would be safe. That was enough for him in the face of potentially no one leaving here alive.

“How long?” Hallene whispered.

“Can’t say. It could be twenty minutes at the soonest or an hour or two. I don’t know what they’re going to do and how difficult getting to us will be.”

Noises outside the door caused Phoebe to jump up and run to Hallene who pushed the girl behind her.

Sam stepped in front of both females.

That rescue might come too late.
