“I’ll let you know when we’re five minutes out, then four, and so on.”
“Okay.” She sat on her knees.
He eased down close to her but clearly with enough room to move if they were attacked.
When Sam’s finger tapped five times on her arm, she tensed for a moment and took a breath to loosen up.
Four-finger tap.
No vehicle had arrived.
Three-finger tap.
Lights bounced through the trees on the far side of the parking lot, heading toward the empty spots.
An electric ATV making little noise emerged with two people. One was Phoebe with her mouth covered.
Tears burned Hallene’s eyes. Her heart thumped wildly at seeing Phoebe.
Sam’s fingers curled around Hallene’s arm as if worried he’d have to restrain her. She’d be lying if she tried to convince anyone she didn’t want to run out there and kick the driver’s butt.
She could.
A gun would stop her.
The ATV driver didn’t look around. Phoebe did with terror-filled eyes, searching for anyone to save her. Poor kid.
Hallene turned to Sam who glanced at her with a light shrug. He had no idea why someone would be late for this meeting either.
Five minutes passed slowly.
Every second pushed Hallene’s heart rate faster.
The ATV driver moved his hands on the steering wheel then the vehicle made a slow circle.
“No.” Hallene squeezed that out. “Please.”
Sam held her firm. “Shh. We can’t. He’ll be armed.”
Hallene had endured losses in her life but this one would gut her if she never saw Phoebe again. In a low voice out of the side of her mouth as she watched the parking lot, she asked, “What now, Sam?”
He made a grunting sound and his hand fell away.
She turned in time to catch a fist across her jaw and blacked out.
