He drew his eyebrows together, confused at that reaction. “What?”

“That’s my personal nickname for him.”

Even after what she’d pulled to get him here, Sam couldn’t deny admiration building every time he gleaned a little more about this woman.

He knew how alone it felt to lose the one parent you cared about. He never stopped looking back and wondering if he could have saved his sister.

Part of him wanted desperately to keep his place with the HAMR Brotherhood, but another part buried deep understood Hailey’s drive to save her half-sister even if it meant forcing Sam to come with her.

Hailey yawned again and said, “Sorry.”

“It’s late. Neither of us have had sleep. Let’s call it a day.”

She nodded and got up as Sam stood. When she reached him on the way to her bed, he caught her arm in a light grip. She’d normally stiffen and snap at him, but she must have been wiped out.

Her eyes latched onto his and her voice came out whisper soft. “What, Leclair?”

“Thanks for helping me understand. I promise you I will not put anything or anyone ahead of helping you rescue Phoebe.”

Her face shifted with a mix of emotions and her lip trembled. She caught herself and said, “Thank you.”

“You’re welcome.” He pecked a kiss on her cheek before she knew what he was doing. “Get some sleep.”

Energy hung in the air between them.

She leaned a tiny bit forward.

Was she going to kiss him? He would stand here all night and wait for that.

Then her eyelashes flickered, and she mumbled something under her breath that sounded like, “Don’t be stupid.”

Please, be stupid, he wanted to argue.

She pulled away and he let her go but allowed his fingers to slide down her arm. Her skin pebbled.

The good news about having not showered yet was that she wouldn’t know he had to take a cold one to kill his boner. He hadn’t been this easily turned on before and never by someone he should be seeing as his enemy.

But she wasn’t.

Not now that he’d made up his mind he was on her team even if the plan still had flawed parts.
