Phoebe’s body shook harder as she clutched Hallene. “I don’t want you to go either. This is awful.”
“Let’s go, Hallene. I am a busy man.”
“One moment, please, then I will come quietly,” she implored him.
“When did people start thinking I was a generous person or one who negotiated?” He waved her off. “Go ahead. I don’t want to hear any whining once we leave.”
W began speaking to one of his guards, but she could not waste a second to find out what he was saying. She turned to Phoebe and hugged her. She whispered in the girl’s ear, “Trust Sam and do as he says. He has a team coming and will get you out of here.”
“Wot about you?” Phoebe blubbered.
“We have a plan,” Hallene lied, trying to leave this child with as much hope as she could. Phoebe could mourn her when she was free and far away from here.
Nodding her head, Phoebe said in a broken voice, “Okay, I can do this. Be careful ... Sis.”
That word clutched Hallene’s heart in a tight fist. She held Phoebe close one last time and swallowed back her tears. “I will,Sis.”
When she turned for the door, Sam pulled her to him and kissed her. “I love you more than life. Do whatever it takes to stay alive. Iwillfind you.”
Hallene laid her fingers over Sam’s hand on her arm. Pain lashed her face. “I love you too and trust only you to keep her safe. Let me go.”
Unable to watch the agony in his face any longer, Hallene turned to go.
A guard grabbed her.
She yanked her arm from his grasp and snarled, “I said I would come willingly.”
“Then do so,” W ordered, no longer sounding amused.
Following W, she glanced back before the door closed. Sam and Phoebe had matching grim expressions.
