Arctic air rushed over me like I was standing in the center of a tundra overlooking an icy ocean. My feet teetered on the edge, the unbearable wind threatening to push me into the frigid waters. Eventually, I’d lose my balance and fall.

The sea would swallow me whole.

Stealing the Infernal Sol from Barric might cure me.

And it might destroy me.

Chapter

Seven

Fane’s stareblazed a trail of fire down my bare back as the pink satin sheets rubbed at my sensitive skin. Every nerve ending was frayed and open, sucking up the onslaught of stimuli still peppering my body.

Well, not my actual body, of course. That was back in Karn’s—or now Barric’s—dungeon in the Underworld.

“Stay still, fiera mika.” Fane’s deep, resonating voice made goose bumps rise on my arms.

After satisfying our sinful craving for each other, we lounged in the room I stayed in when I was Ruin’s prisoner.

The edges of his lips twitched into a sinister smile as he sat in a leather chair next to the bed, midnight strands of hair wild around his flushed face. Moonlight flowing through the window—framed in white and pink drapes—glinted on the steel hoop piercing his bottom lip and the one in his nose.

He looked hot in any setting, even this pastel hell ripped right out of the eighties.

“Why don’t you come back over here?” I pattedthe bed, and the sheet fell a little more, exposing the top of my ass. “I’m getting cold.”

“You’ll only distract me from getting answers out of you.” His bare chest, covered in ebony tattoos and scars, peeked from behind the sketchpad he held.

“But you like my methods.” My tongue darted out to lick my lips, and I angled to the side, giving him a view of my breasts.

The growl vibrating his throat and the lust flashing in his mismatched irises had my nipples pebbling, aching for his touch again. Fane felt my desire through our bond, intensifying his own. The bulge between his legs, barely hidden within his gray sweatpants, swelled.

“Keep misbehaving, and I’ll punish you.” When he heard my little whimper, he arched an eyebrow. “Or maybe Iwon’tpunish you, since you like it so much.”

Ugh!

I flung a pillow at him, which he snatched out of the air and tossed onto the floor, a chuckle shaking his broad shoulders.

“Tell me what I want to know, and I’ll come back to bed and do terrible, despicable things to you.” The scratch of Fane’s charcoal pencil across the page echoed.

A few days had passed since Barric captured me and locked me in the dungeons. After the ritual knocked me out of my body, I’d been able to reach Fane, but the sickness from the Infernal Sol could weaken me and steal that ability.

The first time I contacted Fane again, I told him about Alicia. Thankfully, he informed Knox, and even though he couldn’t get to her, at least he knew where she was. And he knew I’d protect her as much as possible.

I should have been using this time to devise a plan to stealthe Infernal Sol from Barric and escape, but I couldn’t do much from the dungeon.

He had to let me out of my cell eventually.

“I know you’re hiding something from me, fiera mika.” Fane sucked his lip piercing into his mouth as he concentrated on his sketch. “And until you tell me, you won’t get to feel the pleasure of my touch.”

For shit’s sake. He wasn’t even trying to be sexy, and yet tingles exploded between my legs.

“Is that so, Maverick?”

I hadn’t told Fane about Barric’s goal with the Admordum Nexia Covenant, nor had I mentioned that I planned to take the Infernal Sol back. He knew there was a big chance I couldn’t resist the call of dark power, and the amulet would burrow inside of me.

But what choice did I have? If I didn’t stop Barric, he would wipe out every bitten shifter in the world.

Once Fane found out, he’d try to talk me out of it. He’d assure me there was another way.
