“Actually, I had a brilliant plan. Marry the bastard, take his money, and run off rich.” I shrugged.

I wasn’t lying. This was my sole intention, but I’d do justice for my family.

“Smart, but not so much…” Phoenix licked at my ear. “Because I can’t fucking wait to hear you gargle on your blood.”

In painstaking agony, Phoenix moved the blade. The sharp edge made a bigger cut, and my eyes went wide with fear. I awaited the quick slit of my throat, wishing I’d experience no more pain, and I held my breath.

Preston held up a hand. “Hold on. I have a better idea.”

“Oh, come on, now?” Phoenix exclaimed as he released the knife from me and threw his arms up in the air. “I was about to slit her jugular, brother.”

Jesus Christ. I could breathe again. I was alive. That was fucking close.

I applied some pressure to the wound Phoenix had made, and it hurt, but I needed to stop the bleeding. Let these two lunatics go off for a minute so I could regain my strength after my life wasthreatened. Again.

“Don’t worry. This will be fun,” Preston replied as he tapped his lips with his pinky finger, and he reminded me of Dr. Evil. “We can still make use of her.”

“What the fuck are you talking about?” Phoenix questioned as he slashed the blade through the air and tapped the tip on his head. “Have you completely lost your mind?”

Preston stared straight at me. “We’ll sweeten the deal.”

An icy chill ran down my spine.

“With the Bravata’s?” Phoenix asked with narrowed eyebrows.

Phoenix’s brow almost resembled a fucking caterpillar when pulled that close together.

“Yes.” Preston sighed with excitement at his devious plan. “If we can’t get our money back from Sebastian, we’ll just sell Liv.”

Phoenix slapped his brother on the back. “Oh, fuck! Genius!”

I panicked.

“But Sebastian—”

“Is dead. Soon you’ll be too, but you’ll wish I cut your throat instead,” Phoenix interrupted with a cocky grin.

Preston locked eyes with Zane and shot him an order. “Get her cleaned up. We need Miss Valencia here to impress our buyers at tomorrow’s big deal.”

“No! Wait! Please—” my plea ended as Zane covered my mouth and lifted me off the floor.

Zane carried me out, thrashing in his arms and kicking my legs. Anything to break free and fight for my life. The double doors closed behind us, silencing my cries, and sealing my fate.

Those bastards would sell me and leave me for more disgusting men to get their hands on. The brothers would push me further into organized crime and away from the men I loved.

I wanted to cry, but no more tears would come. Instead, I froze in Zane’s arms and became numb. I turned everything off to get through the inevitable—a world without my phantoms.

Zane placed me back on my feet after I had calmed down. “You heard the boss. Let’s get you ready for the ball, princess.”

All I could smell was fucking potatoes, and I hated them. I loathed the carbs from them and the taste. They were the worst vegetable ever to exist, and the burlap sack over my head kept their scent. Rotted old potatoes.

Yuck!
