“Hi, how can I help you guys?” I hear an associate ask.

“My wife needs shoes.”

“I’m not your—” I get out before he smacks my ass again.

“Uh, yes,” the associate replies. “You can…put her down on the chair over here.”

He finally sets me down just long enough for him to sit in the chair and pull me into his lap.

“I think she meant for me to sit in the chair…”

“You’re fine where you are,” he replies.

I try to get up anyway, but he wraps his arm around my waist and holds me there.

“Is there something in particular that you’re looking for?” she asks.

“Anything flat,” I reply. At this point, I am so embarrassed and overwhelmed by the lack of options. She leaves and comes back, bringing a pair of black-and-white sneakers in a size seven and a half.

I slip them on, and of course, they fit perfectly.

“Do you like them?” Ezra asks.

I nod my head yes.

“We’ll take them.”

CHAPTER 5

Ezra

I dropped Briar offback at home yesterday after we walked around for a while. I kept offering to go into different stores so she could shop, but she declined. She doesn’t seem to be the kind of girl who gets impressed with the amount of money I have, which is okay by me. I’ll make sure that we live a comfortable life for the time that we’re together. We get married in two days, and the finishing touches are being put on the wedding. The planner is finishing setting up now, and the flowers will be dropped off in the morning. The wedding itselfwon’t be too long. We’ll get through it, eat some dinner, dance to a couple of songs then go back to my place to see what she can handle from me.

Briar

“C’mon, Maxx, answer the damn phone,” I say out loud while the phone rings. I have approximately forty hours until I am walking down the aisle, and I don’t have the belladonna to kill my husband with.

“Hello?”

“Holy fuck, where have you been?”

“Busy, what’s up?”

“Do you have it.”

I called him when I first thought of this plan to tell him I needed it and what the end goal was.

Silence comes across the line.

“Maxx?”

“I’m sorry, Briar.”

What does he mean, sorry? I ask exactly that.

“It means that sometimes shitty things happen to people. I’m not going to be involved in the potential murder of someone.”

And with that, he hangs up. I am supposed to marry someone I don’t love, and now, someone who I thought was my friend has betrayed me.
