“I’m very busy,” I bit out. “I’m debating whether my nap would be worth the hairball I’d get from eating you.”
The werewolf rolled his eyes. “Don’t be dramatic. I’m your best friend.”
“I don’t recall ever agreeing to that.” I sighed.
“We’re best friends.” He nodded. “Beside, I bought pies.” He set a blanket wrapped basket down and smiled. “I just need you to take the birth control rune off. Now. Right now.”
“I don’t see how this couldn’t wait until I was awake.”
Felix cast me a pitying glance. “Don’t worry Dante, one day you’ll have a mate of your own and understand the importance ofurgency.” The last of his words came out in an impatient snarl. “Rune. Off. Now. Thank you.”
The distant thunder let off an impressive boom. “I don’t feel like it right now.” I said, stretching out a little further in the sand.
His tail twitched. “Look, best friend-”
“Not your best friend.”
“Brother, confidante, comrade, boon companion. You might want to start being a little nicer to me when it comes to matters of the heart.”
I scoffed. “Please, oh wise one, enlighten me as to why?”
“You plan on finding a mate of your own soon, don’t you?”
“Obviously.” I couldn’t think of one demon who didn’t have plans of his own female one day. One of the biggest advantages of traveling to Boohail was to see if anyone else would have Fallon’s luck of finding a mate here. Unfortunately for me, that didn’t pan out. But the food was good, and I liked my cove.
Felix hummed and nodded. “Good, good. Follow up question: when’s the last time you actually spoke to a human woman? No, Cinnamon and Usha don’t count. Those two are a special breed, all their own.”
I thought for a moment. “Alexis.”
“Is a sword.” he retorted
“What’s your point?” I growled.
“My point is,” he began. “Human women aren’t like demon women. They don’t care if you’re a powerful dragon. They don’t even imprint. So you’re going to have to actually speak to her and let’s be honest here, niceties are not your strong point. And because I’m such an excellent boon companion, I am willing to help you when you inevitably piss her off.” He leaned forward and lowered his voice. “And you will piss her off.”
A pregnant pause filled the air as I stared at him. “There better be lemon meringue in that basket.”
“Lemon, peanut butter, pecan, the works.” He pointed to the small rune buried under his fur. “Let’s go, bud.”
Sighing, I sent a small jolt of magic at the rune to dispel it. The sealing magic fizzled and popped and the little M shape faded away. “All right, leave. I’m trying to sleep.”
Felix’s face broke into a wide grin and he turned tail and bolted from the cove. “I’m going to be a dad.” He yelled into the winds.
Despite myself, a small tinge of jealousy wormed its way in my chest as I watched him go. Fallon and Felix had both found their mates. Something only a small few of us could dream of a year ago. But now anything was possible. And my female could be out there.
Mind made up, I stretched back in the sand. Tomorrow, I’d bid Usha and the rest of the crew farewell and begin my search. But not today. Today was for sleep.
