She fell to her knees as a strong light and wind flew upward and around her, creating a barrier around her body. Only one was able to pass through, though. Someone braced her shoulders. She couldn’t look, but she recognized Grayson’s strong hands. The pain was excruciating, like a hot iron branding her insides. Her mind conceded to the torment, and her final barrier erupted. Her knuckles were white as they gripped the ground in front of her. Silent tears slid down her red cheeks, dripping onto the earth beneath her. The rawness of suppressed memories began to invade.
Visions began to play back in her mind like a movie projector, memories of her childhood that she had forgotten. She was always playing with a little boy when she went for walks with her mother. Her mother told her he was a special friend because he was her kind. The more she saw his face, the more sure she became. It was Caspian.
The vivid memory of her mother’s death invaded her mind, flooding it with a torrent of emotions. The grief and anguish that had been buried deep within her now rose to the surface, threatening to consume her.
“Lita, you are very special. You are the daughter of an alpha and daughter of the queen of the fairies. You are the bond that will unite our worlds, my little fairy princess.” Lita’s mother spoke to her softly as they walked through a field. Small lights flickered around them, dancing and singing in happiness at their presence.
Another memory entered soon after. “A darkness is after us, a demon who thirsts for our blood. He desires a unity with you. He will not have you. You are meant for much more. In order to protect you, I’m going to have to leave you for a while. I’m going to dissolve this human life in order to shield yours. This way, the darkness will not be able to find you, not until you’re old enough to face it.” Her mother’s words were quick and filled withsorrow. She looked at her, knowing that she was going to leave her.
“I will see you again. I will be waiting for you in Elysia.” She then threw a cloak over Lita and walked away from her.
From under the cloak, she saw her mother vanish as the wolves lunged toward her. She was not ripped apart, like her false memory had shown. Beside her was Caspian holding her hand, his arms wrapped around her, shielding her and hiding her aura. He was there that day. She had forgotten such an important friend. Not completely, but her memories were shielded from her. In order to bury her powers and lock them down deep, she had to forget important moments and people. In her memory, the wolves ran off and began to fade, and she began to come back to the present.
The swirling stopped. Asher was in front of her instantly, gently holding her hands. There were so many things she wanted to say, but they were stuck in her throat. She wanted to cry, to shout, to laugh … She was kept in the dark to keep her safe, but it was painful not knowing the truth. There was no light without the dark. In order to keep her light protected, they had to put her in the dark. She understood it but just needed a moment to accept it. Her mother was alive. She was the fairy princess. Caspian … Caspian was her childhood friend.
She looked up from the ground and searched for Caspian, who was standing only a few feet away. He had saved her that day but had to disappear from her life to protect her. Then, when he met her again, he still couldn’t tell her because he didn’t want to stir the memories that would break the seal. That must have been tough for him. He still remembered her.
Their eyes met, and there was a quiet recognition between them. She gave him a small smile to show him that she was grateful for everything he'd done, and that she understood whyhe had to leave and couldn't tell her. She took a deep breath and looked into Asher’s eyes. Life was getting complicated.
She was the one and only fairy princess.
Chapter 48
Grayson’s hands fell from her shoulders, a soft, calculated release that carried heat with it. She turned, checking for the stoic protector beneath the sweat that flecked his foreheadand clung to his shirt. “Are you okay? You were taking the pain away, weren’t you?” Lita watched him beam a crooked smile at her.
“That’s my job. To take your pain away. Of course, I’m fine.” Grayson gave her a reassuring smile, but the look of exhaustion was evidence of how much pain he had endured.
I’m back,Mira said, and she felt how true those words were in the core of her being. With the fairy seal broken, her wolf’s presence flooded her with an intensity that almost buckled her, bringing strength and power that overwhelmed Lita’s senses with its vivid, raw joy.
Lita had forgotten what it was to be complete like this. She laughed out loud, unable to contain the rush of relief. It was like inhaling deeply after nearly drowning, every sense sharper, more vibrant, more alive.
I’m stronger than ever.Mira’s voice hummed in her mind, proud and radiant. You can’t lose me. Not now, not ever.
Mira … I’m so relieved.
The seal was holding me back. Once I regained the memories of what happened, it tried to seal me away as well. You’re stuck with me forever now.
I wouldn’t have it any other way. We’re unstoppable now.
You’ve got that right.
Lita smiled and turned to Asher with both relief and uncertainty. There was a lot that she needed to tell him.
But he caught her off guard with a steady gaze and words that unraveled everything.
“I know who you are, Lita,” he said. His voice was soft, but it struck her like thunder.
“How?” Her voice trembled more than she wanted it to. She tried to steady it, but she couldn’t. “How do you know?”
Asher didn’t flinch, didn’t look away. “Caspian told me,” he said simply. “Before we searched for you. It’s the only reason I’veaccepted Grayson living among our pack.” Asher gave Grayson an irritated look, which he snickered at. This was one of the reasons why Grayson had stayed away from Lita. They were afraid his presence would awaken her and break the seal earlier than they wanted.
“Oh … you don’t mind at all? It doesn’t bother you?” Lita wanted to make sure he was okay with who she was. After all, it was a big deal.
“Lita, I don’t care who you are. You’re mine. It’s as simple as that.” Asher talked into her hair and left gentle kisses on her head.
“Asher …” She leaned back so that she could stare into his face. “Do you not only accept me, but my people? All of them?” This was important to her. She was the princess of the fairies, and it was her duty to take care of them.
“Look how serious you look. Of course, Lita.” Asher thought she was being adorable with her questions.
