Grayson groaned and slapped his head. His damn temper had made him snap. And not just at anyone, but toward her, his person. She was his family. He only had her. He was takenaway from his family as a toddler so that he wouldn’t develop loyalties toward anyone but her. His whole life was built around her. He lived for her. She hadn’t put it together yet, but she was the only family he had. Her, and now Asher. He would even fight against Luke, the fake brother he grew up with, for her. No one topped her spot, and no one ever would. That was why most guardians never ended up with a significant other, because their number one spot in their hearts belonged to the royal family.
“I think she hates me now.” Grayson groaned into his hands.
Asher smiled at him. He would probably look that pathetic or worse if he was fighting with Lita. He was close enough to Grayson to know that he would never be malicious toward her. He knew his anger was directed at keeping her safe. What he was irritated about was not knowing what to keep her safe from. Asher slapped Grayson on the back. “She doesn’t hate you. You just made her mad. On that note, I want to know why. What is it that I don’t know?”
“UGH! I don’t know. That’s the problem. I don’t know. I want to know … I need to know, and it’s driving me to the edge. I know something happened, but I don’t know what. Something happened when we were racing. I have my suspicions, but I don’t know anything. She said Mira was upset. She wouldn’t be antsy over nothing.” Grayson grunted as he pulled his fingers through his hair.
“Relax, rabid animal.” Asher turned and looked at Caspian, the creases on his brow knitted together. “Get rid of the mate block.” If her wolf was sounding the alarm at something, he wanted to know why, and he would.
“Sorry for all the prying, Lita. I’m sure it’s hard having everyone always in your business. You even have that soulmate link, so there is zero privacy in your life.” Kristen held onto her dear friend’s arm as they strolled together.
“I guess Asher doesn’t have any privacy either. The only difference is that he’s expected to fight, and even encouraged to do it, while I’m supposed to stand at the top of the tower and wave our colors in support. It isn’t me, Krissy. I want to be there, too. I want to be standing side by side and fighting with the rest of them. Even if I’m important, I’m not weak. I can be a big help. I don’t want them risking their lives just like they don’t want me risking mine. It’s necessary sometimes, though. That’s really what this fight is about. It’s about me fighting for my place.”
“You are strong, both mentally and physically. You make me proud of you every day.” Kristen smiled at her luna. She was such an amazing person.
“Awe, thank you Kristen! You’re your own bowl of awesomesauce.”
Kristen and Lita strolled up to the washroom, noticing a small walk-through attraction next to it. It was a fun house.
“You want to?” Kristen gestured at the house and Lita nodded with a huge grin.
Kristen had tears in her eyes, laughing at Lita as she walked through the dizzy tunnel. She kept falling over, finally relenting and just crawling out. She was thoroughly dizzy when they walked over the tilting floor. Both girls swayed side to side and were using the wall to steady themselves.
The two girls held hands as they walked into the mirror maze. They wanted to make sure they weren’t separated. A child threwa rubber spider at them over the wall, and they both squealed in fear. Tough werewolves, zero … fake spider, one.
Lita, are you okay?Asher’s voice rang out in her head.
“The mate link is unblocked.” Lita gave Kristen a crooked smile.Yes, everything’s fine. I just got spooked going through the funhouse.
You’re in the funhouse? I’ll be waiting for you at the exit.
It was weird. Having her mate in her mind all the time might seem like a pain, but she’d missed feeling him there. It was like having Mira there. She would miss her if her presence vanished.
I hope you’d miss me more than Mira, his snarky voice rang in again.
Hey, get in your own mind. Never mind, it’s annoying. She heard his chuckle in her mind, and she smiled. She wouldn’t have to explain herself to Asher. He would be able to understand exactly how she was feeling. She just hoped that would be enough.
“What’s left?” Lita asked, as they freed themselves from the crazy mirrors.
“The haunted room, and then the slide with the ball pit.” Kristen beamed a bright smile toward Lita. They felt like kids, and the ball pit was icing on the cake.
They waited their turn and walked through a light-blocking curtain. The room was dark, with faint lights from red glow sticks staggered throughout. But they were werewolves. All they needed to do was push their wolf senses forward. Kristen wasn’t good at that, so she clung to Lita. Lita would brace herself when she could see something coming up but purposely wouldn’t tell Kristen. These motion scares made Kristen squeal and jump from being startled.
“Lita, tell me next time!” Kristen giggled as she put her other hand on her chest.
“What? I thought you liked scary stuff. This is payback for the scary movies,” Lita said proudly.
“I didn’t pick them, though!” Kristen whined, putting out her bottom lip.
Mira began to growl in Lita’s head. She stopped and scanned the area noticing one person in the distance. Well, one was a person for sure. The other was different. She already knew who they were. No wonder Mira was on high alert. She had sensed what Lita was finally able to, now that she’d brought her senses forward.
Kristen, I want you to turn and run.
What? Why? What’s wrong?Kristen was scrambling to see in the dark.
This is an order from your luna. There is an emergency exit to the side. Go now!Lita used her luna voice and commanded Kristen to leave. She watched as the girl clenched her eyes and obeyed her order. She knew Asher would be worried, but she couldn’t just leave. After all, it wasn’t in her nature.
Dammit, Lita. Get out of there. We’re coming.Asher’s voice resonated in her head.
