My hands start to bleed, a side effect of being in the human world, and I ease up on the blows. But then he opens his mouth, and I lose control of my rage.
I grab his arm and let the singular most powerful emotion take control. Warriors aren’t permitted to use their powers on this plane of existence, and I just screwed up royally.
Jason isn’t breathing, the rise and fall of his chest has stopped. I killed him with just the touch of my hand, and now I’ll have to revive the son of a bitch if I don’t want to compound my error in judgement.
“Oh my God.”
I whip my head around at Kyra’s voice, and she’s got her hands covering her mouth. Shock glows from her golden eyes along with a whole lot of fear.
“Kyra,” I begin, scrambling to my feet. “I can explain.”
“What did you do?”
Fuck. Fuck, fuck, fuck.
“It’s not as bad as it looks, I swear.” When she continues to stare at me, I try to find the right words to make this okay. “I mean, yeah, Jason’s dead, but I can?—”
“You killed him!”
“And I’ll bring him back.”
She narrows her eyes, the glow fading into a dark brown. “You’ll bring him back?! Do you know how crazy that sounds? You can’t bring him back, Reaper. You fucking killed him.”
“I know, and…” This isn’t going well at all, and I get it. Why would she believe something so insane? The only thing I can do is show her. “Just… watch.”
Standing at Jason’s side, I squat and rest my hand on his arm. Reviving those I kill isn’t as easy as the killing, and it takes considerably more concentration and power, but there’s no room to mess this up.
It takes longer than expected, and Kyra’s hovering doesn’t help, but after a few minutes pass, Jason jolts awake with a deep inhale of air. I fall back on my ass, more relieved than I’ve ever been.
“How?” Kyra whispers.
Jason looks around, his gaze settling on me. “What did you do?”
“Knocked you on your ass because you wouldn’t leave,” I lie, darting my eyes to Kyra and silently begging her not to correct me.
Fortunately, she doesn’t. Unfortunately, what she does do is somehow worse.
“You need to leave,” she demands.
For a moment, I think she’s talking to Jason, but her gaze never leaves mine, and I know she’s talking to me.
“Reaper, get the hell out of here,” she says, her tone unforgiving. “You need to leave right now.”
Jason smirks at me as if he’s won a battle he’s not even a part of.
“Kyra, please, just let me explain,” I plead, ignoring the other man.
“No.” She shakes her head emphatically. “No, there’s no explaining, Reaper. Just… go.”
I hesitate for a few moments, giving her a chance to rethink this, and when she doesn’t, I sigh and get to my feet.
“Fine. I’ll go… for now.”

Kyra
“I’m glad to see you’ve come to your senses.”
