CHAPTER 16

SPIKE

“She got it done.”

Cheers erupt around the table. We’ve been in church for only a few minutes, but Soul’s news quickly changes the entire mood in the room.

“Seriously?” Abyss says. “You doubted my woman?”

“Chill the fuck out, man,” Soul says with a laugh. “No one doubted Carmella. We knew she’d come through, but even you gotta admit, it took longer than we expected.”

“And Carter Maxwell will be in our clutches within the week,” Abyss snaps. “Not only did she get him within our reach, she got the charges thrown out on a technicality so we don’t have to contend with cops at all.”

“Yeah, yeah,” I comment. “Mel’s incredible. No one said she isn’t.”

“Moving on,” Malice says. “We need to plan how we’re gonna actually get the guy.”

For the next hour, we toss around idea after idea until a solid plan of action is in place. Soul rises from his chair, and I know he’s about to dismiss church, but I can’t let that happen. Not yet.

“I’ve got one more thing,” I say, standing, and Soul shifts his gaze to me. “If that’s okay with you, Prez?”

He sweeps his hand. “The floor is yours.”

I move to stand behind my chair and grip the back of it until my knuckles are white. “I, um, have some news.”

“You’re not dying, are you?” Grim signs, his movements agitated.

“What? No.”

“Fifty bucks,” he counters.

Groaning, I lift my hands, so I don’t get another fine. “I’m not dying. Although, that might be preferable.”

“Spit it out, already,” Rogue demands. “Some of us have old lady’s waiting on us to finish up here.”

“Glitter’s pregnant.”

My eyes dart from one brother to the next until I’ve seen the shock in all of their expressions.

“Who’s the father?” Possum asks.

“Dumb ass, he is,” Thorn snaps before leveling his gaze on me. “Right?”

“Do you really think I’d be telling you this if I weren’t?”

“Right. So…”

“I take it you’re not happy about this,” Soul says.

“Not at all.”

“Didn’t you use a rubber?” Abyss asks.

“Bro, the bunnies are supposed to be on the pill,” I remind him, not that I should have to because he’s the doctor who prescribes them all birth control. “Besides, I was wasted that night. She caught me in a weak moment.”

“Listen, it doesn’t matter how it happened,” Malice adds and glances at me. “Making her your old lady isn’t in the cards, is it?”

“Fuck no!”
