Chapter 5
Grayson
Tonight, I'm really excited for a simple night in with Kaitlyn. Just the two of us and some mouth-watering food. Because when I get there, whatever she’s cooking smells amazing.
Only when I get inside, I can immediately tell something is wrong.
I pull her into my arms. "What's wrong, Starshine?"
She goes on to tell me about the breakfast disaster at her dad's, and by the end of the story, she’s in tears.
I pick her up and carry her over to the couch. Then, I sit her in my lap and wrap my arms around her. This is as much for her as it is for me, because I hate seeing her upset like this. Though, Ihave an idea of what she’s going through. Losing a parent is hard enough, and it really sticks with you and changes your life.
Then, to have something so dear to you from that parent destroyed in a mean-spirited way, angers me on her behalf. I wish I had been there to help protect and comfort her.
"The worst part is my dad says Linda’s sorry, and she wants to have lunch with me to talk about it. I don't know if he'd feel the same way, if he knew what she did to us. I really regret not telling him, but part of me feels like now it's too late." She reaches for a tissue on the end table and blows her nose.
"Sorry, I know that's completely unattractive," she says.
"Starshine, there isn't a single thing you could do to turn me away." I wipe a stray tear from her face.
"I want my dad happy, but it's just too much. I love Dana and all, and I'm not sorry about us getting together, but a part of me wishes I hadn't come back. It was right to stay away all these years."
Tension grips my heart. If she had come back sooner, what would our life look like? I’m reminding myself that now is our time, and I’m the one holding her, so I need to make the best use of our time together.
"I hate to see you like this, but I'm glad you came back. I know I won't win any points with your dad by saying this, but you don'thave to have lunch with her. In fact, I think it would be a horrible idea."
"That's what Dana said, too." She relaxes into me and rests her head on my shoulder.
"Well, I think you should listen to her. She knows more about all of this than I do." I kiss the top of her head, and she cuddles with me a minute, before getting up.
"Let's not let this ruin our night." She says with a forced smile.
"That's my girl." I follow her into the kitchen, ready to do whatever I have to in order to make her forget about it.
I sit on one of the bar stools and just watch her work around the kitchen. It's such a small, every day detail, but one I want more of. I want to come home to this every day. Hell, I'd be happy to havehercoming home tomecooking.
"Tell me more about Oakside," I say.
"Well, what do you want to know?" She asks.
"I searched for it online, and it looks almost like a bed-and-breakfast."
"It’s set up that way. Lexi and Noah wanted to have the guys feel at home as much as possible."
"You have any female soldiers come through?"
"We have had one so far, and she was the most motivated to heal and get out of there that we have had," she chuckles.
"Too many guys?" I ask.
"I think so, though she never complained."
"Do you like living in southern Georgia?" I ask her.
"Yeah, Oakside is in the town of Clark Springs. It's a tiny everyone knows everyone town. The biggest thing there is Oakside. But we are about twenty minutes from Savannah, and from there, it's another twenty minutes onto Tybee Island, which is my favorite beach."
Hearing that, I start to imagine her in a little bikini on the beach, and my cock gets hard. Teasing her last night, left me so hard that nothing helped, but I'm hoping it will be worth it tonight.
