“This is the good stuff,” Bella says quickly, squealing. “What about you, Langley?”
Langley opens and closes her mouth a couple of times, and then she looks at her glass and finishes it off, wincing as she wipes her mouth. I’m both parts intrigued and feeling guilty that she’s drinking on my watch.
She’s nervous.Terrified to tell me.My cock stirs in my pants at the thought.
“Of course I’ve thought about it. Just look at him.”
It feels like someone’s poured a glass of warm water over me at her words, and I have to discreetly adjust my raging erection in my pants. I don’t even know what to say to that, and she’s avoiding eye contact so I can’t even gauge her reaction, or let her see that her words stunned me. Never—not in the almost twenty years that I’ve known her—has she ever treated me like anything other than her brother.
I’m about to change the subject when my phone dings. One glance at the screen has both dread and anticipation building up inside of me.
“Your taxi is here, Bella,” I say quickly, looking at Langley.
But she’s just leaning back in her chair, still avoiding eye contact.
“I’ll walk you out,” she declares to Bella, and they both stand up.
“Thank you for the lovely dinner,” Bella says to me. “I’ll get my car tomorrow once I’ve sobered up.”
I smile and nod. “Sounds good.”
They both head to the front door, and the whole time, I’m screaming for Langley to look back at me, to let me see her eyes.
But she just continues walking, as if our whole relationship wasn’t just turned inside out.
CHAPTERTWELVE
LANGLEY
I give Bella a quick kiss, and she grabs both sides of my face and looks me dead in the eye.
“You’re welcome,” she says, her voice low so that Luke doesn’t overhear.
I frown. “For what? Making thingssupremelyawkward for us now?” I can feel the anger simmer beneath the surface. She had no right to ask any of those questions. I stupidly played along, stupidly took the bait thanks to all of the wine, but now… Luke was waiting for me. Alone. And I’m sure he’ll have questions I’m not ready to answer. “He’s mystepbrother,” I hiss, pulling out of her grip.
Bella’s eyebrows knit together. “You keep saying that. Personally, I don’t see anything wrong with banging your stepbrother. It’s not like you’re blood related.” She opens the door, looking back at me over her shoulder. “I want all the details tomorrow.”
I slam the door once she’s out, not even dignifying her with a response. I stand there, looking at the tiled floors for what feels like several minutes. How can I possibly go back in there after our bold admissions? My cheeks flame when I think of what his expression will reveal. I’ll just go back in and quickly excuse myself for bed. It’s just after seven, which is an acceptable bedtime.Especially for someone who was just hospitalized. Balling my fists, I walk back into the dining room.
“I’m going to bed,” I say quickly, keeping my eyes on my phone as I swipe it from the table. “Thank you for dinner.”
Don’t look at him.
Don’t look at him.
Don’t look at him.
“Langley.”
His voice is low, and I’msotempted to look at him, but I keep my eyes trained on the screen of my phone.
“Goodnight, Luke.” Hurriedly, I turn around and head to the stairs.
I hear him get up from the table, so I quicken my pace and hope I can make it to my room before he catches me. Just as my feet hit the landing, I feel his hand grab my elbow and twist me around to face him.
“Look at me,” he commands, and my eyes snap to his like I’m a fucking marionette.
Devastation. Rage. Confusion.
