Jake nods his head before leading us around the side of the main house towards the back, where I know The Khaos Group’s holding facility is. Getting my first look at the building from the outside, I feel nothing. I was expecting something after what I went through within those walls, but it’s just a building. Maybe I’ll have a different reaction once inside; after all, I never saw the outside when I was held here. Just the room Rex held me in.
Jake places his hand on the scanner located on the outside of the building, and we hear a click before he pulls the door open and gestures for us to enter. Standing inside are the two men I remember from when I woke up in the hospital. I thinktheir names are Seth and Austin, but I could be mistaken. Also standing with them is Mrs Knightlye.
“Good morning, boys.” Mrs Knightlye says in greeting. “Megan has been moved to a standard interrogation room. For obvious reasons, I thought it was best after what you experienced Wreck.”
“Thank you for that.”
“You’re very welcome, dear. Now if you’ll both follow me, I’ll take you to her. Seth and Austin here will stay and watch from the viewing room just as a precaution, but I don’t see Megan trying anything. I don’t think she’s quite that stupid.”
“You’re not staying?” Shadow asks as we follow her down the hallway.
“No, I need to deal with Rex. Apparently it’s time for his mother to kick his ass and snap him out of this mood he’s been in since he found out what happened. Everything his brother’s have tried has failed epically.”
“Did Jake mention I had an idea to help?” I ask.
“Yes, he did mention that, but he didn’t have any specifics. Do you mind telling me what your plan is? In case it’s something I can use while talking to him.”
“Of course. I had the thought that Rex might need to do something to earn my forgiveness, even though, if I’m being honest, I don’t have anything to forgive. He was a victim in this just as much as me. Anyway, my plan is to ask Rex to find my missing younger brother. I have searched and followed every lead I could find and have nothing. I figured maybe by asking Rex to look, he might find something I missed but also feel like he’s earned my forgiveness in the process.”
Mrs Knightlye stops walking and turns to face me. “You are something else, Wreck. Many men in your position would blame my son just as much as Megan, but not you. Not only do you see the cold, hard truth about what really happened, you want tohelp him too. I like your plan, and if it’s okay with you, I’m going to mention it when I speak to him.”
“That’s fine with me. If he chooses to follow through with finding Dre, I can meet with him in a few days and hand over everything I have.”
“We will meet with him,” Shadow says, interrupting me.
“Yes, we will.” I say, agreeing with him.
“Thank you both.” She says before carrying on walking.
At the end of the corridor, Mrs Knightlye stops outside of an unmarked door before saying, “We’re here.”
It’s time for me to face the woman who nearly cost me my life. It’s time for me to say what I need to and then forget she ever existed. She’s about to become a thing of the past, just a cautionary tale for all Devil’s Inferno members when picking a partner in the future. Other than that, she’ll become nothing to any of us. She’ll be left in the past and forgotten. Just like she deserves.
Chapter Thirty-Seven
Shadow
Without saying a word to each other, Wreck lets go of my hand, gives me a brief kiss, wipes the happy look off his face, and then enters the room holding Megan, with me directly on his heels. My first look at Megan since she was taken away is a shocker. Her normal put-together appearance is nowhere in sight. I have never seen her look any less than put together. Not like I was expecting her to look like she normally would. She has been held here for over a month now, and I very much doubt anyone within The Khaos Group cares about her beauty regime or the latest fashion. She’s dressed in a pair of black joggers, a plain black top, and her hair down, looking rather tangled and messy. The normal vibrant purple of her hair has also faded a hell of a lot since she’s been here.
The moment she spots Wreck her hazel eyes fill with hatred, so there is literally no change there then. She still has an irrational hatred for him. Here I was hoping she’d have gotten over that while being held here. Obviously, that was wishful thinking on my part. The moment she spots me behind him, the change in her is instantaneous. Her face lights up. She looks like all her birthdays and Christmases have come at once.
“Oh Shadow, you came for me.” She says, totally ignoring Wreck now. It’s like he doesn’t exist. All her attention is now focused on me.
I can’t help but look at her in utter disbelief. She has got to be fucking crazy for even thinking I’d be here for her. I know she’s been told multiple times about keeping her distance from me when she’s finally released from The Khaos Group’s custody, but it seems like that has gone in one ear and straight out the fucking other. It seems like me telling her I was done with her did the same thing too. She can think whatever she wants, but there is only one reason I’m here right now, and that’s the man next to me.
Wreck’s laughter brings me out of my state of disbelief, and glancing over at him, I can’t help but fall into hysterics with him. Some things never change with us, that’s for sure. I have tears streaming down my face from laughing so hard, and Wreck doesn’t look like he’s fairing much better than me.
“What the fuck are you two laughing about?” Megan shouts, drawing both our attention to her.
“You.” Wreck replies, no longer laughing. His voice is emotionless and bland. I fucking hate it. Oh, don’t get me wrong, she deserves the tone he’s giving her; I just don’t like hearing him speak that way. That’s not my Wreck. My Wreck is full of life.
Megan goes to speak again, but Wreck cuts her off. “No, you can shut up and fucking listen. This is my time. My time to say my piece after what you tried to do and ended up putting me through.”
It’s rather shocking to me that Megan actually listens and keeps her mouth shut. I’m not quite sure what to make of that. It’s not like her at all. What game is she playing? Because she’s got to be playing some sort of game, there’s no way she’d willingly let him speak to her like that and actually listen.
“I don’t know why you hate me, and as much as I thought I needed to know that as well as why you did what you did. I released I don’t give a fuck anymore because there’s absolutely no chance any reason you have will be sane. You’re reaction to Shadow entering this room with me gave that away loud and fucking clear.”
Despite Wreck’s words about no longer caring about any of her reasons, Megan doesn’t stay quiet. Not like I expected her to; the woman is clearly more insane than I ever realized.
