“What do you mean?”
“Ciel, you literally keep everything from falling apart. Without you, none of the Shadows work. You’re the foundation, the strength with which they all operate.”
“That sounds more like Obi.”
“Obi is clearly the leader—the decision-maker. But without you, everyone would melt. Wynn would rush into things and get himself killed. Ryuji would go way too far and get arrested. I’ve never seen Obi in the field, but I’m going to guess his plans would never work without you.”
“So… you like me because I’m competent?”
She pursed her lips. “Not exactly, but you have to know that you’re not just the shy, quiet one that everybody allows around because you’re useful. You’re the fucking backbone. You’re the most skilled person I’ve ever met. You’re absolutely brilliant. You’re quietly hilarious.” She gently tapped my head. “I like what you’ve got going on up here. And you’re genuinely kind.”
“I told you before, I kill people and steal their shit for a living. Technically, I have a higher body count than Wynn, even with his… extracurriculars.”
She laughed. “Okay, well, that’s good to know, but that’s not what I mean. I mean, from the very beginning, you treated me like a friend. You didn’t expect anything from me. And you shared your knowledge with me freely. I always want to be around you, whether simply enjoying your companionship or learning as much as possible.”
