Chapter 48

I’VE VISITED MAUROenough times to be able to slip past his guards unseen and not trigger any alarms.

If I’m lucky, I’m going to find him in his office. He bought this building only a few months ago so he’d be closer to me.

As I crack open the door, I pull out my gun. I take a peek inside.

He’s alone, his back turned to me.

I point my gun at him and approach.

“Is it true?” I say through my teeth.

Mauro turns around, but there’s no surprise on his face when he sees me. “Is what true?”

“Did you kill my family?” My eyes are trained on his. “Answer me!”

“You don’t want to pull the trigger,” Mauro says, lifting his hands up.

He’s unarmed.

There’s nothing that can save him now.

“Really? And why’s that?” I ask.

He’s probably stalling so he can alert his guards. Maybe there’s a button on his desk he has to press.

“Because I have your precious wife.” A smile spreads across his lips.

“What?” I don’t lower the gun.

“You don’t believe me? Okay, then take a look.” He reaches into his pocket.

“Don’t move, or I’ll shoot you!”

“Easy. I’m just getting my phone.”
