“I don’t know about that.”
The waitress brings me my burger and I take a huge bite of it.
Emilia gives me a pointed look.
“It’s just a burger.” I push the plate toward her. “Come on. Try it.”
She waves her hands. “Uh, no. Don’t tempt me. I’m just going to sit here and pretend I’m a lady from... I don’t know which century... and this tasty stuff doesn’t exist.”
“Okay. More for me then.” I pull the plate back.
Chapter 44
IVISIT MY FAMILY OFTEN, but tonight is a special occasion because it’s Leo’s birthday. Somewhere in the middle of the party, my father places his hand on my shoulder.
“Honey, come with me for a moment.”
“Sure.” I give him a small smile and follow him into the hallway. “What’s up?”
“Did your husband sign the deal?” he asks.
“What?” I blink at him.
“You’re his wife. I’m sure you know what’s going on more than anyone else.” The corners of his lips quirk up. “So did he sign the deal with Fabbri?”
I eye him carefully. Alessandro and Mauro have been planning to make some business moves, but no one is supposed to know about it.
“How do you know about that?” I ask.
“Oh, honey. I know everything.”
My father knows a lot of things because he has his spies everywhere, but Alessandro has been particularly careful to keep the deal under the wraps.
Unless Mauro’s the one who told someone. Or maybe one of the lawyers who looked at the contract.
“Who told you?” I try again.
