Chapter 40
IDON’T KNOW IF SEEINGMauro tonight will help me uncover what happened to me, but even if it turns out to be nothing, coming here was well worth it because of the smile on Sienna’s face and the happy sparkle in her eyes.
I doubt she even knows how beautiful she is. But as she holds onto my arm and we enter the room, she keeps her head high up with radiating confidence.
Everyone’s gazes turn to her. Everyone wants to know who she is.
But she’s mine.
They can only wish they were in her company.
My gaze scans the room, looking for Mauro, but I don’t see him anywhere.
Will his reaction once he sees me tell me something? Does he even know who I am? I guess I’m going to find out if he shows up.
“You should—” I start to say to Sienna.
“Yeah, I know,” she interrupts. “Stay quiet and look pretty. My parents made sure that I know what to do at a business party when I’m with my husband.” She rolls her eyes as she says it.
I chuckle. “That’s not what I was about to say.”
Her brow furrows as she looks at me. “Oh. Then what were you about to say?”
“That you should keep your eyes peeled and let me know if you see our guy.”
“Right. Yeah, sure.” She gives me a small smile.
A few moments later, her grip on my arm tightens.
“There,” she says.
I follow her gaze.
Mauro stands next to one of the tables with drinks, and he’s busy talking to someone. His gaze briefly flies over me. His expression doesn’t change, but something shifts in his eyes.
He says something to the man he’s with, and then he pushes his way through the crowd, away from me.
Where the hell is he going?
“Stay here,” I say to Sienna and nod to my men who are behind us so they’d come closer.
