Again she smiles at Evan, and this time it’s with unmistakable heat that is surprisingly realistic.

“But if you’re worried about the office furniture,” she says, focusing on Mary Grace again. “Don’t be. I’m not saying there hasn’t been a time or two with a…let’s just say hard, sharp surface or two…” She laughs lightly. “... I much prefer comfortand luxury. What’s the point of dating a man if he can’t give me a king-size mattress and Egyptian cotton, am I right?”

Evan and I both choke on our drinks. And I don’t know about Evan, but heat slams through me low and hard. And I want to show Finley my king-size mattress.

Mary Grace’s cheeks get red, and her eyes are wide. “That is completely inappropriate,” she says.

Finley nods. “I agree that sex on desks is inappropriate. At least during office hours.”

“That is not what I meant. We shouldn’t talk about those things here.”

Finley looks around. “Would you rather go into the ladies’ room? Oh! Do you have some questions? I am happy to help. I’ve had sex on lots of different surfaces. Some are definitely better than others.”

“That is not what I…”

“Evan, Mr. Stevenson is across the room,” I say, literally stepping in. I take a step that puts me right next to Finley. “We should go speak with him about that contract he wanted us to look over.” I take Finley’s upper arm and turn her away. “Mary Grace, we will see you at the office on Monday.”

“I don’t see him,” Evan says after we’re about five strides away from Charles and Mary Grace.

“This way.” I steer Finley toward the wide glass doors that open out onto the balcony and trust that Evan will follow.

“You can’t fire me,” Finley says, as I escort her across the room.

“Don’t say anything until we’re alone,” I tell her.

Shockingly, she listens. We step out onto the balcony, and I pull her to one end and around a stone column where we can be alone. I drop my hold on her arm and turn to face her. Evan stops beside me. It’s impossible for anyone to see her behind us.

“Now you can talk,” I tell her.

She crosses her arms. “Okay, maybe I was a little inappropriate, but none of this is really Mary Grace’s business.”

“I tend to agree. Though I understand her concern about you dating an associate. I think you cleared that up for her though.”

“So why are you mad at me?”

“I didn’t bring you out here because I’m mad at you. I got you away from her before you said or did something worse, like tell her you sucked Evan’s cock in the break room. Or before you threw a drink in her face.”

That obviously surprises her because she’s quiet for a moment. Then she smiles. “I didn’t have a drink.”

“You would’ve grabbed hers or mine and thrown it at her. That would have been upsetting. I had expensive scotch.”

Her smile grows. “Yeah. And I’d have been mad when no one had it on video.”

“You’re going to have to get along with her. Or at least not have daily tension.”

“Why can’t I just work with you and Evan every day? I thought Girl Kyle is supposed to be her paralegal.”

“She’s a partner. If she wants you to do something, you’ll have to do it.”

Finley slides a glance to Evan. “I’m doing Evan a favor. He should try to keep me away from Mary Grace.”

“Evan is doing you a favor too. Helping you study for the bar, right?”

She studies me for a moment. “I’m doingyoua favor too. What are you going to do for me?”

“What are you doing for me?” I fire right back.

“I’m helping Evan make partner.”
