There’s a short flash of surprise in my dad’s eyes, but then he takes Christopher’s hand. “Christopher. How are you?”

Christopher makes a point of looking at me and then back to my dad with a smile. “Never been better.”

My dad is an extremely smart man, and I know he registers exactly what’s going on here.

He looks at Evan next. “Hi Evan.”

They shake hands as well. “Hi Mr. Anderson. Good to see you again.”

“Please call me Greg.”

Okay, so far so good.

“So the four of you are coming to breakfast,” my dad says.

And I guess we’re going to just put it right out there.

I take a breath and meet his gaze directly. “Yes. The four of us are coming to breakfast. Together,” I say, emphasizing the last word.

He nods. “I see.” He looks at each of the men. “You have very good taste in women.”

Christopher puts his arm around Evan and hugs him against his side. “We have very good taste inpeople.”

My dad inclines his head. “Yes.”

I sigh. “Yes, Dad, it’s a little complicated. Of course, right?”

My dad gives me a little frown. “What do you mean?”

“I always make things messy and complicated. So this is no different. But…” I look at each of the guys with smiles. I meet my dad’s eyes again. “It just is what it is. We’ll figure it out.”

He’s still frowning. “It doesn’t seem messy. Actually, you seem very happy.”

I arch both brows. “Well…yes. I am. I’m very happy.”

My dad smiles. “Then it’s actually really simple. It’s always a good idea to do what makes you happy.”

I feel my eyes widen. “Oh. Well…Thank you.”

“So just keep that up,” he says. “And I’m glad to see you. I was going to call you later, but I’m thrilled to ask you about this in person.”

“About what?”

“Charles and I have been talking, and we think that the firm needs to add environmental law to the practice. But of course, we would need a strong lawyer with a passion for it to head up that part of the practice. We’d like for it to be you.”

My eyes widen even further. “You’re…you’re offering me ajob? Atyour firm?”

My dad was shocked when I went to law school. I’m not kidding. He wasshocked. He didn’t believe me until I emailed him my acceptance letter, and I don’t think he evenfullybelieved I hadn’t forged that until I sent him a copy of my first semester’s transcript.

“Yes. Of course. It’s why I was so glad you took the temporary paralegal position. I wanted Charles to get to know you. He agrees with me. You are exactly the right kind of lawyer to fight for the environment. It takes someone smart and fiery.” He looks at Evan and Christopher. “No offense to our other partners and associates, but we’re a little…stuffy. We need someone who isn’t afraid to go outside the box to fight with these corporations.”

“No offense taken,” Evan says with a grin.

“I agree completely,” Christopher agrees.

Dad looks at me again. “What do you say?”

“I haven’t even passed the bar.”
