and if there was one thing I had learned
about the eternal ruling family,
it was that one must never be dull.
This was especially true with Hermes.
So with my answer, I also carried a smirk
drenched in the nectar of a confidence
I did not have and yet came easily.
‘I thank you for your protection,’
I said smoothly, choosing
my words with great caution.
‘But why should I trust the trickster God
with any of my intentions or secrets?’
His eyes gleamed with a joyful mischief.
‘Oh so itisa secret then, is it?’
He dropped his voice to a theatrical whisper.
‘I will simply have to guess what it is.’
There was careful wielding of power here;
his face was open with laughter
but even I knew better than to cross
the God of Boundaries.
‘And Why Are You Here?’
The question escaped my lips
before I could even stop it.
It hung there out of my reach.
Hermes seemed surprised,
almost as though he wasn’t
asked this often.
‘Do you not know, young one,
that I am what they call
a psychopompos?’
