A place feared by mortals and immortals alike.

In her stories, she spoke of rivers of fire,

of ground that was hot, glowing coals.

She called this a realm of torment

but before I could ask her more,

she changed the subject.

What I saw here was so much worse,

a place beyond imagination.

All around me I heard the roars,

and it struck me like a slap to the face.

Those roars were not of anger.

They were wails of pain, a hunger for freedom.

An eternity of beings all trapped

in a burning forever.

‘Why Are We Here?’

I asked Styx softly.

She would not look at me.

Hades did.

His pale skin reflected

the red and yellow

of the flames,

As he said quietly,

‘This is where he is.

Your father.’

Devastation

Has someone ever

with just a few words?

Has the world
