Thump, Thump, Thump
The sound of my heart
battering my rib cage.
Thump, thump, thump
The creature edged closer
and I slowly stepped back.
Thump, thump, thump
The light was right behind it,
making it a massive, ominous silhouette.
Thump, thump, thump
I scrambled backwards
as it started gaining on me.
Thump, thump, thump
A howl escaping its throat,
It lunged at me and I fell back—
‘Cerberus!’
A commanding voice filled
every edge of the darkness.
The dog-monster stopped so suddenly
that even I halted.
‘Stop.
Not her!’
I heard it whine softly
like it was a much smaller pup
and not the monstrous,
three-headed thing it was.
Then, to my surprise,
it lay down and thumped its huge tail
and I heard the words,
‘Good dog.’
