Since their children were taken
by Zeus to Olympus,
Styx had seen little point
in living inside an empty home,
so she had returned to her river,
and Pallas had left to roam.
But now, Pallas and Styx had built
a home in which they finally lived
together where the home they
had built for me once stood tall.
A strange pain grasped
my chest when I saw this.
But making something out of ruins
is a powerful kind of practice.
Still, this was the place
where so much began
… and ended for me.
Their palace was silver and jade,
the colours of the serpents
Styx cared for.
I had heard her river
ran through its centre,
despite the waters being acrid
and full of spirits.
I wondered what a home
full of poisonous waters was like?
It was time to find out.
Taking a deep breath,
I knocked on the glimmering
silver door.
