“When I go on a crime spree, I’ll make sure to miss your place.” He pulled his phone out. “So, tomorrow night? Eight? I should be done in the early afternoon, but every shoot always goes long. Give me your number, and I’ll have Molly call if I can’t be on time.”

I accepted his phone before I could really think about the consequences.

“Here you go.” I typed in my number and handed it back.

It took me a moment to wrap my mind around what was happening. Sebastian wasn’t just any animal lover. He was a bona-fide teen heartthrob, and I’d just given him my private number.

My phone vibrated.Hello.

“There, now you have my number in case something comes up on your end.”

I stared at my phone. “Thank you?”

“Do you have dietary restrictions?” He grinned. “Pet peeves or desserts you’d die for?”

Did I? “I eat food. I like chocolate. I’m pretty easy, actually.”

“Are you really?” This time his laughter was sly. “That’s good to know.”

Wait.“What?”

“See you tomorrow night, Stone Wilder.” Sebastian turned away but threw a backward wave before he left the clearing.

“What the heck was that about?” I asked Hades and Persephone.

They’d lost interest in the human goings-on. Hades gave a stretch, plopped down on the grass, and stared up at me, no doubt waiting for more chicken. Persephone nudged in beside him.

“You have a huge new fan, I think,” I told them.

Was Sebastian really some sort of troublemaker?

It would be nice to eat something I didn’t have to cook for a change, but I’d have to keep my eyes open. If he planned a charm offensive just so he could get around the rules where my animals were concerned, that would be no bueno for either of us.

Would brushing him off hurt Ariel’s chance for a big donation?

“Let’s watch and wait and keep our powder dry,” I said to Hades and Seph as I put them into the van.

In the meantime, all three of us had work to do.

Chapter Four

Bast

“Molly,I met the most interesting person today.” I was ready to drop with exhaustion by the time I finally got back to the RV that night. Molly had dressed in sleep pants and a t-shirt and she'd already made her couch into a bed for the night.

“Did you? Who?” she asked.

“Did you see the hybrid wolfdogs in the pen the night we drove in?”

“I saw the pen.” Molly set her tablet aside and picked up a half-finished glass of wine. “I was busy talking to the AD. I poured you a glass. Behind you.”

“Thanks.” I took a sip, and the flavor of her favorite merlot burst on my tongue. I needed wine after the day I’d had. “It’s a long story, but I met the guy who works with them, and he let me see them up close. He’s from the wolf sanctuary I told you about. He said I could tour it sometime.”

She widened her eyes. “Is that why you asked me when you were free to travel?”

“I’d love to go there. Wouldn’t you?”

“I don’t know.” She pulled a throw tighter around her. “How close do you have to get to the animals?”
