“That’s right.”
“What just happened?” Epic’s face scrunched up adorably.
“Old joke,” I explained.
“Ah. Got it.” He backed away slowly. “I’ll just bring in the bags while you reminisce.”
We watched him go.
“You’ll both be staying with us until Friday?” asked Ken.
“Yes.” I hesitated. “No. Epic lives in town, so I don’t know if he’ll be here or at his place.”
“No worries. We’ll assume two for breakfast if you don’t let us know ahead.”
“Sure. Thank you.”
“My pleasure. What brings you to town?”
“I attended a wedding in Santa Barbara, and I’m taking a few extra days. I have friends here.”
“Anyone I know?”
“Dan and Cam Livingston?”
“Oh, I know both of them very well. Dan and I do business. I helped his brother start Café Bêtise as a matter of fact.”
“Small world.”
“You don’t know the half of it.”
Epic returned. “Did you see the yard yet? The ad said there’s a hot tub.”
“There is. I’ll show you.” Ken led us out French doors to a nicely landscaped back yard with a redwood deck, a gas grill, and a four-seat, above-ground spa.
“Looks like heaven,” I said. “I look forward to spending time in there.”
“Enjoy.” Ken shook my hand. “If you need anything, my number is on the fridge.”
“Thank you.” Ken took the form I’d filled out and left.
“Well, this is really nice,” I said. “Thanks for the idea.”
Was it weird that I felt awkward now that we were back in St. Nacho’s? After all, Epic could return to his normal life if he wanted to. He didn’t have to stay with me.
Since I was only halfway home, the transition hung over me like a black cloud.
“What’s your work schedule like this week?”
He checked his watch, then blew out a breath that made his hair fly up before falling over his eyes.
“I’m scheduled to catch the early dinner shift in an hour.” His eyes brightened. “But that means I don’t close. Why don’t you meet me at Nacho’s Bar for drinks? Some of my friends will probably be there. Ten o’clock?”
“Sure.” I’d get a nap and still have plenty of time to set up my computer and wade into work before then.
“What will you do for dinner? You should come to Bistro.”
“I’ll find something. I want to call Dan and Cam to let them know I’m back. Maybe they’ll want to go out.”
