I thought about the ugly mornings after when he’d lost interest and I had to gentle some stranger out into the street with a few kind words and a solid goodbye—the ones that were hopeful and the ones who felt ashamed. Luis didn’t disappoint them; that was always my job.
The attempted seduction put a damper on their wedding festivities for me, especially since I now suspected that their three-way idea was the sole reason I’d been invited.
What would have happened if I’d come with Laurie? Would I have gone along with their plan? Passed it off as an adventure and gone home feeling like one of the strangers we’d given no more thought to than a sex toy?
I glanced up to find Epic’s eyes on me.
“Come here,” he said simply and held his arms out wide. I went, determined not to cry, and yet…shit.
“Hush.” He stroked my hair. “Shh.”
“Fucking Luis”—I sniffed—“and his fucking games.”
“Shh.” Epic took my weight and rocked me gently. “They’re a pair, aren’t they? Leave them to it.”
“I should have known he had some sort of ulterior motive.”
“You couldn’t. It’s not in you to think like that.”
That made me laugh. “I spend almost all my time trying to think like human traffickers.”
“That’s not the same as wondering if your ex has some douchebaggery in store for you the night before his wedding.”
“Right?” I had nothing to grip but the muscles in Epic’s arms, which—wow—were pretty firm. “Sorry.”
“No reason to be sorry.” He slid his hands up my arms and over my shoulders to wrap them gently around the back of my neck. “You and I had a great day, didn’t we?”
“We did.”
“And we’re going to have a great day tomorrow,” he said, “despite the wedding. Then it will be all over, and you’ll never have to think about the two of them again.”
I still felt a little dewy eyed when I nodded. He handed me a tissue.
“Dry up.”
“Okay, but I’m ordering alcohol from room service. You want anything?”
“Don’t.”
I turned. “What?”
“That’s not going to make either of us feel better.”
“C’mon. What if I order a very nice bottle of champagne and one of each of their desserts?”
“Well, dessert.” He frowned. “When you put it that way…”
“So that’s a yes?”
“Could be a yes.” He eyed me thoroughly. I tried to look stable and unemotional. “Okay, yes.”
I picked up the phone next to the couch to place an order. Epic strolled over, and I invited him to sit next to me. He slid beside me and put his arm around me. Next thing I knew, he was kissing my neck.
In-room dining answered, and I managed to tell them what I wanted. It wasn’t easy, what with Epic’s lips and teeth and tongue finding all the secret spots that made my skin sizzle.
“Mm. What are you doing?” I asked after hanging up.
“I’m kissing you.”
