I heard him sigh audibly. “Was it ever really fake for you, Ryan?”

“No,” I admitted, throat tight. “It never, ever was.”

“Well, my work here is done.” Epic’s light laughter was so sweet it brought tears to my eyes. “Keep in touch, sweetheart. Get some sleep.”

“All right,” I whispered. “You too.”

Chapter Twenty-Five

One Month Later

“You’re here? Where?”I looked around the crowded lobby.

“I’m in the bar.” The noise level around Epic's words was extra loud.

“Ooh, good place. Order me a Maker’s Mark. Be there in no time.”

The Bonaventure’s massive lobby featured shops, a restaurant, a bar, fountains, and a dozen seating areas all built around and between elevator towers. I rounded the central tower and found Epic seated at the bar with his pilot case beside him. He had our drinks in front of him and a warm, welcoming smile on his face.

“God, it’s good to see you.” I didn’t hesitate to pull him in for an embrace. Given the crowd around us, I left kissing for later. He took my hand.

“You too. Sit.”

I sat.

“How is it possible”—Epic jiggled his drink so the ice clattered—“that you’re even hotter than the last time I saw you?”

“Smooth talker.”

“You look delicious.” He covered my hand with his. “I have plans for you.”

“I gained five pounds quitting cigarettes.”

“You needed it. When we met, I could feel your ribs.”

“You could feel them again right now if we go up to my room.”

He flushed and glanced away. “I’m trying to be respectful here. Trying not to jump your ass in the first ten seconds.”

“Then I hope you fail spectacularly.” I sipped my whiskey.

“We have all night,” he pointed out. “You need to treat me to a nice dinner at least.”

“I’m at your service. Where would monsieur like to go?”

“I hear they have a nice restaurant here.”

“I’m sure they do.”

“And a revolving cocktail lounge?”

“Yup.”

“Then we won’t need to give LA traffic any more of our time.” He slung his arm over the back of my chair. “The ride from the airport took forever.”

“LA’s a nightmare.”

“I’ll take St. Nacho’s any day, thank you.”
