Luca’s brows pulled together. “I’m sorry. I can’t help but feel like I might be partially responsible for that.”

Mia shook her head. “No. Please don’t apologize. It has nothing to do with that. I promise.”

“Hm.” There was something she wasn’t telling him.

He passed Waylon coming up the stairs when he was on his way downstairs. Did something happen between the two of them?

Luca wanted Mia to trust him enough to truly open up, but he wasn’t going to push her. He couldn’t. So he did the one thing he could do, relied on sarcasm.

Luca leaned back against the counter beside her, taking a long drink of his shake. “If Waylon’s fucking with you…more than usual, I mean…I’ll knock him out. Just say the word.”

The truth was, if he came to blows with Waylon, Luca would probably get his ass kicked. But if it meant defending Mia’s honor and protecting her? It would be worth it.

Mia threw her head back and laughed. “Oh my gosh, Luca.”

He smiled. God he loved making her laugh.

“I’ll be sure to let you know if I need you to rough anyone up.”

“Offer still stands. Full enforcer package,” he teased.

“Appreciate that, Rookie,” she winked. “Ready for tonight?”

“One-hundred percent. We’ve got this one in the bag. I’ve got a good feeling.”

Mia nodded. “Good. Because, no pressure, but if y’all lose this series I have a feeling Skeeter’s going to be so depressed.”

“Just Skeeter?”

She smirked. “Maybe.”

He chuckled, but underneath the humor, his stomach flipped again.

I want her to be happy.

I want her to be safe.

I want her.

Those three truths were starting to collide in ways that terrified him.

It was only a matter of time before something cracked.

And Luca didn’t know whether to pray for it or dread it.

He finished off his shake, quickly washed the shaker bottle, and sat it on the drying rack.

“I know I’ve thrown a lot at you in the last twenty-four hours, but I, uh…I need a favor.”

A favor that he wasn’t planning on asking but in the moment, it felt like the right move.

“Ooookay. You have to tell me what it is first, before I agree to it.”

Luca chuckled. “Fair enough.” Hepaused for a beat. “I wanted to invite you to the game tonight. I can set two tickets aside if you want to bring someone with you.”

There. He asked.

Why did that feel harder than admitting he was a virgin?
