Luca hoped Nate’s apology went a long way in putting things back on track with the whole team.

The minute he was alone,he retrieved his phone. He fought back the grin when he saw Mia’s name on the screen.

He pulled up the group chat first. A post game congrats text. One he wasn’t going to be the first to reply to.

Their private message thread was much better anyway.

Mia: Hell of play, Luca. Not going to lie, that was the sexiest thing I’ve seen in a long time. Looking forward to Book Club. Tomorrow? Maybe after dinner?

‘...that was the sexiest thing I’ve seen in a long time.’

There was no way she meant that.

It had to have been post game excitement clouding her judgement, but Luca couldn’t fight the urge to lean into it.

Luca: Sexiest thing ever, huh? You mean it?

Mia: Oh I mean it, Luca Blackford. That was a bad ass play.

He blushed.

Luca: Thanks. I can’t wait to get back home. Sleep in my own bed. See my favorite girl ::winky face emoji::

Mia: Your favorite girl? Do I know her?

Luca: Pretty well actually. She’s coming to Book Club tomorrow. I heard she’s bringing the snacks.

Mia: Mmm. Snacks. I like snacks. And what are you bringing, Luca?

Luca: The charm. Lol.

Mia: Cute. I can’t believe I’m admitting to this, but it’ll be nice to have everyone home again tomorrow.

Luca: Don’t worry. I won’t tell Waylon that you missed him.

Mia: Don’t you dare!

Luca: Better be on your best behavior then.

Mia: Always.

Luca: Goodnight, Mia. See you tomorrow.

“Honey, we’re home,”Casey’s voice echoed through the house a few days later.

Skeeter barked, then excitedly ran toward the sound of his master’s voice.

“Who’s a good boy?” Mia heard Casey coo. “Did you keep Auntie Mia company while she studied?”

“Woof!”

“I bet you did. Where’s she hiding?” Casey asked, his voice growing closer.

“Oooo, Mia.” It was Owen’s voice this time as two sets of footsteps echoed toward the kitchen while another set stormed up the steps.
