He stops laughing to stare at me. “You’re serious.”

“Gods talk,” I inform him haughtily. “We know when a new species is being created. Gods frequently come to Viridian with a list of their requirements. We pull the samples for them.”

“Did you pull samples for the angels?” he asks hoarsely.

“We pulled samples at the request of the god who created angels and humans. We didn’t ask for specifics,” I reveal. “My mother delivered the original samples. When she returned to extract samples from the new species, she met my father. He was human. She fell in love.”

His eyes crinkle with confusion. “Are you a demi-goddess?”

I shake my head. “No, I’m a god or goddess, whichever term is preferred. Personally, I like goddess because it celebrates my uniqueness, and it’s more modern. A lot of the old gods are old-fashioned males who can be patronizing.” I wrinkle my nose at the thought.

“Viridian blood is dominant. But the human shell is another form I can wear,” I explain. Another thought hits me. “You can take another form, right? I know angels have a human form, but their main form is less corporeal.”

He hesitates for a minute, then moves closer to me. Bending down, he murmurs in my ear. “I have four forms. The one you see now—my human form. My angel form—it’s larger, casts a golden glow, and is less corporeal, as you describe. A demonic form that is sort of a mix between human, angel, and demon with a few additions… wings of flame, horns on my head, and red eyes. And the Lightbringer, which is simply a column of light.” He lifts his head to gauge my reaction.

I try to tone down the excitement thrumming through me, but his laugh tells me I failed to hide my emotions. “Sorry. It’s ingrained. I don’t know how to turn it off.”

He tucks a piece of hair around my ear. “I don’t want you to change.” Then he laughs. “You did, though, didn’t you? I’m not imaging the differences?”

“Between my human form and this one?” I ask with a mischievous grin. “Yes. I’m taller, my facial features are more defined, and…” I look down at my chest and hips. “There’s a bit more padding in specific places.”

The palms of his hands skim down the sides of my body. “Both are stunning, but I have to admit, this form fits you better. Stronger. More reflective of your personality. Although I do miss the cute freckles.”

I slide in tighter and fit my taller body to his. “Definitely a better fit.”

With a groan, his hand slides around my back, and he presses my body into his. His sharp blue eyes never leave mine as he slowly dips his head closer and closer. “Are we done talking yet?”

Instead of answering, I close the distance between our lips. When I was watching those sunrises on Viridian and bathing in all the light and heat, all I could think of was kissing him again.

His pouty lips taste of sunshine and darkness, like a warm drop of honey with a smoky flavor beneath it, and I can’t get enough. I run my tongue across them, and when they open, I dive in to taste more of him. My tongue captures his in a dance as old as time. Wrapping my hand around the back of his neck, I hold him to me.

His lips harden on mine, becoming more urgent, as if his only thought is to devour me. I can’t help the shiver that cascades down my body at the thoughts this brings to mind. Me sprawled beneath him as he feasts on every inch of my body.

A low moan slips from me.

“Evren,” he groans, pulling his lips from mine. “Hold on.”

Seconds later, we’re somewhere else. The dizziness hits, and he eases me into a sitting position. When I open my eyes, he’s kneeling in front of me, with a fire crackling behind him.

I glance around and spot a massive bed piled high with pillows and luxurious bedding and smile. The rest of the room begs to be explored, but the desire thrumming in my veins is too insistent.

Turning my attention to him, I wrap my hands around his jaw and pull him toward me for a kiss. Picking up where we left off a minute ago, I pull him in tighter, wanting his hard body against mine.

Large hands pull me to the edge of the sofa, and he slips between my legs.

I widen them, wanting to feel his hardness against my core.

Firm lips continue to dominate mine, but the kiss isn’t rushed in any way. He kisses as if he has an eternity to do so. His tongue stokes the fire inside me, over and over. My legs wrap around him, and I slide my body against his, adding fuel to our already burning kiss.

Finally, his lips leave mine, and he stares down at me with his beautiful blue eyes. “I know you can’t stay and live in my world forever, but while you are here, I want to pretend that this is more than a temporary interlude while the world is on pause. I want you to be mine in every way possible. What do you say?”

I think about the possible implications and the hurt that will inevitably come later, but I don’t care. All I want to do is throw caution to the wind, and grab onto him with both hands.

I lean forward and place my lips at his ear while my hands continue further south to grasp the hem of his shirt. “Yes. Before the world intrudes again, I want you, and this moment. Everything you have to offer. Show me what’s important to you.” As I lean back to look into his eyes, I pull his shirt up and over his head.

Flames burn his blue eyes. With one swipe of his hand down my body, my clothes disappear.

I laugh. “Cheating, are we?” My breath catches when he does the same to his pants. “Mmm, there’s a definite advantage to using a little magic.”
