The caress reverberates through my body, and my cock hardens. Swallowing hard, I force myself to ignore it and keep my eyes fixed on Gabriel. “Vargas, have a platoon of our men ready nearby.” I wave a hand over the scroll Cormal wrote the spell on to send a new message to Ishkova.

Vargas gives a quick dip of his chin and disappears.

“You don’t trust Gabriel?” Evren asks sarcastically.

“I trust very few people in this world,” I murmur, gathering her tightly to me.

Gabriel points at the sky. The signal. My wings flap once, and I shoot up into the air to follow him, Evren gripped in my arms.

She clings to me. “It’s faster than… I imagined it would be.” The breathless tone to her voice tells me she finds this exciting and possibly a little terrifying.

Gabriel banks, coming down on the outside of a small town, where a platoon of angels is waiting for him. The ground trembles when he lands as he purposely makes a show of it.

We softly land a short distance away.

The angels move restlessly, shooting Gabriel questioning glances, before returning their gaze to me.

Gabriel controls them with one sharp glance. “They’re here to help. Aim for the beast’s head. It’s the only vulnerable spot on them. Don’t underestimate their strength or ability to move quickly. They might look dumb, but they’re supremely adept at fighting. Pair up. Go.”

Without a backward glance, Gabriel and his men take off.

Evren is frowning. “How many times has he fought these beasts?”

“They occasionally manage to slip through the portals, so we’ve all had to fight them. Although, it sounds like Gabriel’s had more experience than most,” I admit, unsure of what this means right now. “Ready?”

She looks down at my hand. “Are you asking to be my partner?”

I laugh. “Are you flirting? As if I’d let anyone else be your partner. I told you… you’re stuck with me.”

ChapterTwenty-Four

LUCIFER

The trail of beasts splits off in multiple directions close to the city. The largest path leads into a suburban neighborhood sure to be full of people, so that’s the one we take. Entering slowly, we walk down the center of the street, giving ourselves room to maneuver if one of the beasts come charging out of the house.

My jaw clenches to see the large number of bodies lying everywhere. Anyone on the street when they came through didn’t have a chance. I glance over at Evren and find her staring at a woman on the sidewalk.

A beast stumbles out of a house with its coat on fire. We rush over, and I slide my sword between its eyes. When it lies dead on the ground, we peek into the house. A witch stands there with a fireball in her hands.

“Aim for the head. Pass it along.” At the very least, we can give these people hope and a fighting chance.

Hands trembling, she nods and picks up her cell.

A scream pierces the air, and we rush outside. A little girl is crying on the sidewalk, a bloody heap lying at her feet. A beast is in the street, circling with a wolf.

Evren cocks her arm back and lets the dagger fly. It hits dead center between the eyes. The beast falls to the ground immediately.

I blink at her, then hold out a hand for the dagger. It flies into my hand, and I toss it to her. “Good shot, but you left yourself defenseless. Don’t do it again.”

Eyes narrow in anger, as she competently twirls the hilt. “Don’t give me orders. I wasn’t defenseless. I knew my partner would have my back.” She palms the dagger and stalks off.

My lips twitch at the fiery tone of her voice as well as the reprimand, but the sight of her long legs striding away in anger makes it all worth it.

The wolf’s tongue lolls out the side of its mouth as he, too, watches her walk away.

“Hmm. I could use a new rug for my office,” I tell him, running a hand down his coat. “Interested in dying for a good cause?”

The wolf immediately backs away, hackles raised.
