“Ishkova,” I grit out.
He waves a hand and Ishkova appears beside me.
Beaten badly, and straining at his bonds, his usually light green eyes are red with fury. He narrows them on Gabriel.
“Humans don’t belong to her,” Gabriel calls out.
I help Ishkova to his feet. “They don’t belong to anybody. Stay away from Evren.”
With those words, I vanish, taking Ishkova down to the Underworld with me. Vargas is waiting in my office when we arrive.
Once we get the bindings off of him, blue scales coat the surface of his skin. He’s close to changing into his true form. A wyvern.
The window behind my desk rattles with the fury that is rolling off him in waves. “I’m going to pluck every single feather from that bastard’s wings before I kill him.” He raises his fist to pound it on my desk, but I stop him with a raise of my eyebrow.
With his strength, he could put a dent in it; then I would really be pissed. Strangely, I’m not as angry as I thought I’d be.
“You can’t kill him,” I inform him. “At least not until he falls from grace.” I pause to let him curse Gabriel and all his angel minions. “Can I finish?”
He looks down with a contrite expression on his face and nods.
“Did he say what his plans were for Evren?” I ask him.
“He wants her dead. When he took me, he expected you to leave her at the warehouse, and he was furious to find everyone gone when he arrived at her place. He destroyed her lab,” he reveals. His body flickers for a second, then changes to his more human-like form.
“Anything else?”
He hangs his head. “Sorry, I couldn’t hear much over the beatings. It sounded like he said ‘abbey’, but I can’t be certain.”
I glance at Vargas behind him, and he disappears immediately.
“Go rest. I’ve got Moge watching Evren and the others,” I order him.
He strides to the door but pauses for a second. “Thank you. The Devil would have let me rot in my enemies’ hands forever or until they killed me. I won’t forget this.” Without waiting for my reply, he leaves.
The second he’s gone, I create a portal to take me to the street in front of The Abbey and arrive in time to see Evren meet up with Cormal. Outside the protection of its walls. What is she doing? Do they know each other? I start to walk toward them, but a golden light catches the corner of my eye.
I turn to find Gabriel’s fanatical gleam focused entirely on Evren. With a quick shift, I move in front of him, completely obscuring the sight of her. Frustrated, he takes off. I turn around only to find Cormal and Evren gone.Damn it.It looks like I’m going to really have to kill Cormal.

EVREN
There’s a line to get into The Abbey when I step outside. Before anyone can register what I’m doing, I whisper a spell to release the humans from the compulsion I placed in the ad. Several large men step out of the line and walk away with a dazed expression on their faces.
A hand cups my elbow, and I quickly turn to face the possible threat only to find Cormal. “You startled me.”
His eyes dart around the street. “There’s too much power out here. Can’t you feel it? We need to move. Now.”
I look around but fail to see or feel anything. This form prevents me from accessing my powers and puts me at a huge disadvantage. The only defense I have is the gold dagger I infused with my blood. Angels aren’t the only thing it can kill.
Cormal points to a shadow on the wall. “There.”
I look at him like he’s crazy. “The shadow?”
“Portal,” he corrects, his tone abrupt. “Let’s go.”
I know it seems stupid to go with someone I just met, especially someone who seems to be as powerful as him, but he knew her. My mother. He knew her real name and what she looked like, enough to mistake me for her. With a nod, I follow him through the shadow.
