“If we can figure out a way to get all the flyers in simultaneously, we can place the canisters at the exact same time in a little over a minute. I’d like to keep trying until we can get it under a minute, though. The beasts are fast, and they’re predators. The more time we give them to think, the worse it is for us,” he explains, tossing the stopwatch to the large griffin. “We need five of us to hit the targets. All six are training, though, in case we need a back-up.”
He motions to a seat. “Stay up here.” When I sit down, he flies to the center of the ceiling where the rest of them are hovering. Lucifer, Daire, the dragon, wyvern, and phoenix fly out and hover over a spot on the ground, waiting for the signal.
When a sharp whistle pierces the air, all five take off, flying impossibly fast. Surprisingly, the beast below is maintaining the same incredible speed. They all move faster and faster until the griffin yells “now!”
“Wait, stop!” I yell, but they don’t hear me.
They dive for the markers on the ground and drop the stone. The beast comes out of the shadows at one of the markers and clamps his jaw around the leg of the phoenix. He cries out.
Lucifer lands next to the beast and waves his hands to distract him, but the beast refuses to let go of his prey.
“Fuck. He isn’t going to release you. Do it!” he orders.
The phoenix places his hands on the beast’s head and incinerates him. Lying on his back, I watch in awe as he regenerates his leg right in front of me.
Lucifer is cussing up a storm.
“What is it?”
“The beasts have lethal instincts. They’re confused when they first see us run the scenario, but they are always ready the second round. We tried to use teleportation instead of flying, but not all of us have the ability and by the time we shimmered to the second spot, they were spreading out to cover the entire edge of the perimeter,” he states wearily. “Thankfully, they caught the phoenix who can regenerate. We’ll have one shot at this. We’ll pick it up again tomorrow.”
The phoenix transforms into a startling good-looking young man, with dark red and black hair, and beautiful tan skin that has been inked with numerous tattoos. I can’t see his eyes because he keeps them turned away, but deep lines of sadness mark his face. The griffin turns out to be a tall woman with long blond hair, deep brown eyes, and golden-brown skin. She smiles at me. They both quickly disappear.
Shockingly, Ishkova is the wyvern. He laughs at the expression on my face, then bows respectfully, before he too leaves.
Daire folds his black wings into his body. I find it interesting that they’re black instead of white, but given his father’s genes, it’s not surprising.
The gigantic dragon transforms into Valerian. He walks forward and leans down. “I admire you for taking charge of the situation, and I apologize for the way we all behaved at The Abbey.” He steps back and looks at Daire.
Daire studies me carefully, then looks at his father. “I also apologize for what I said at The Abbey. I was upset about more than the beast, and I made you the target of my anger. I’m sorry. Truly. Hopefully, this makes up for it. Not just to you, but for the supernaturals who were under my protection.”
They both leave via a portal in the far corner.
“Zephyra, the griffin, volunteered for the spot and beat almost all of the other contenders. She doesn’t speak to anyone. One of the beasts wiped out her family long ago, and she took a vow of silence because of it. I’m hoping their deaths will allow her to move on,” Lucifer explains, stroking my hair from my face. “Your hair is so beautiful. I’d love to see it fanned out across my bed.”
He picks me up, and I automatically wrap my legs around him.
“And the phoenix?” I ask, sliding my arms around his neck.
“Cormal brought him here. Said he needed a purpose. His name is Rivan,” he murmurs in my ear. “I’ve missed you in my bed. Come home with me?”
My heart soars. “Always.”
ChapterThirty-Four
LUCIFER
After three days away, my need for her is almost feral. I slam her against the wall and thrust into her slick heat. Her body opens like it was designed for me. Swiveling my hips, I revel in the feel of her wrapped around me. I pull her down until I’m as deep as I can go, and she’s grinding on me.
Cheeks flushed, she grips my hair and digs her heels into my back. “Horns. Show me your horns again.”
I growl. “I’m barely holding on to the edge of sanity. The horns will send me over the edge.”
She licks the side of my neck. “I won’t break, remember?” Her body flexes tightly on mine. “They were so… sexy.”
With every word out of her mouth, I can feel the demon rising in me and taking over. When the horns come out, she sighs and runs her hand over them.
If she keeps that up, I’m going to come hard. Pulling her off the wall, I place her on her hands and knees in front of me and slam back inside her. Setting a hard pace, I thrust into her body until I feel her release. With her body milking mine, I carefully pick her up and carry her over to the bed. Once her body loosens, I flip her over and start again.
