“I’m not dumb, just haven’t had the luxury of trying different types of drinks,” I shot back.

He looked at me, and I could sense a sudden flash of pain from him. He looked away, staring down at his glass, before downing it and pouring another one. Should he be drinking that much?Oh well, werewolves probably don’t feel it…

“So, you and Rayhan were in training together?”

“Hmm.”

Once again, the attempt at conversation died, and I was relieved when our food came. We began eating, and I was happy to just busy myself with that. It was good, but the thought of Rayhan kind of killed my appetite. My gorgeous Yum Yum was dealing with so much by himself…

Liam moved across to grab the salt, and his shirt moved slightly, showing off some of his tattoos. He had some sort of symbols drawn across one side of his chest, but what intrigued me was the small picture of a bird sitting right above the symbols.

A raven? Interesting tattoo for a wolf.

I didn’t ask about it. It was clear Liam was a man of few to no words and with a very broody attitude.

When we had finished eating, he ordered some more drinks, and I realised he was trying to delay us leaving.

“You were the witch who told us about the attack,” he said suddenly. I nodded, glad for once he was starting a comment. “I’m part of that pack where the attack took place. I lost my grandfather, great aunt, someone I considered an uncle and many more that night, but if you hadn’t told us, we wouldn’t have been prepared, and we would have lost so much more…” he said, frowning.

“I’m sorry about your loss,” I replied. Many werewolves had died that night. He shrugged.

“Sometimes the loss of those living hurts way fucking more,” he said quietly. I frowned. What did that mean? Did he lose someone?

“I guess so…” I said, thinking about Rayhan. Being there without him hurt too… “So, were you visiting family?”

“My father wants to step down as Alpha soon. I came to do some paperwork as he’s assigning some of his business over to my name, and not all of it can be done electronically.” He was finally talking, and I felt relieved.

“Oh yeah, you guys are at that age to become alpha. Are you excited?” He looked at me as if it was a stupid question and raised an eyebrow.

“No.”

I frowned, thinking,I’m sure it was an honour...But I could tell there was more to the man before me than I knew. So, I simply nodded and focused on my food.

Behind those Grey Eyes

Liam had taken me to a hotel suite and told me to sleep in the bedroom whilst he did some work in the living room area. At first, I didn’t want to, but when I realised Rayhan wasn’t going to come anytime soon, I entered the bedroom, locked the door, and tried to sleep.

I tossed and turned, but sleep was not coming to me. Sometimes I would be dropping off, only for my eyes to fly open, and I would be fresh again. I picked up my phone; no message from him either…

I sighed, staring at the ceiling. I couldn’t sleep, not without his arms around me. I didn’t even realise that I hadn’t actually spent a night without him since…

I sighed softly, staring at the ceiling, pondering over everything that had happened. Raihana hadn’t been given a grimoire; Rayhan had made her pass it to us before we left, simply because of the connection Endora had with her. The grimoires we had were mostly dark spells, but then again, it seemed Endora could relay any spell to her if she wanted to.

My mind then flitted back to what had happened earlier, and I sighed heavily. I was about to message Raihana, but she hadn’t been online for a few hours either. Who was I kidding? It was almost four in the morning. I tossed my phone down and stared at the ceiling.

I jolted upright when I heard the door in the main suite open and then the sound of talking.

“Is she asleep?” My heart leapt, Rayhan!

“Yeah, I think so,” Liam’s reply followed. “How’d it go?”

“As good as it could have… it doesn’t take away what they did.” Rayhan’s voice was cold. I didn’t move from my bed, listening to the conversation. Although I wanted to run out to him, I stayed sitting on the bed, listening to what he had to say.

“Did she seem okay?”

“Yeah, pretty much.”
