She sighed and gave me a tiny nod.

“There’s nothing wrong with you,” I said and closed my eyes.

But there was something wrong with me.

Before I brought her up to bed, Jackson had pulled me off to the side…

“You didn’t use a condom.”

I tipped my head at my brother. “So?”

“Is she on birth control?”

I glanced over at Kya. It was oddly enticing, watching her push pieces of fruit past her lips.

“No.”

Jackson crossed his arms and leaned back against the wall. “And you came inside her?”

“I’m aware.”

His meaning wasn’t lost. Yesterday, when the doctor said she was due for a new shot, I told him not to give it to her. I don’t know why. For some reason, when I thought about her belly swelling with my child, my cock got hard and all I wanted to do was fill her up. Fuck her hard until she was so full of my come, it was running down her leg.

Tobias sauntered over with a stupid smile on his face. “We’re talking about Enzo bastard children.”

“Fuck off,” I grumbled and rolled my eyes.

“He has a point.” Jackson’s brow rose, “You know how it works. Bastards have no place in the family.”

I sighed. Fucking rules. No bastard can take over, just like how the same hand that took the head of the family's life, couldn’t rule it. That was one that had probably saved Jackson a few times. Especially when it came to Carmine.

Everyone thought the mafia was a powerful underground organization. And we were. But it was just as much a place of bureaucracy as it was hardened criminals. It wasn’t the competition that killed me, it was the damn laws.

Wars could only be started under certain circumstances, yet vengeance was as important as breathing. Hence the incredibly detailed plan for kidnapping Anita Gonzalez. Even then, there were things we couldn’t do to her.

Carmine was against all this shit. He said we should just take over and run things how we wanted. I was with him on that one. We were criminals, not politicians. Everything we had was tainted in blood, because we took it by force.

“I kind of like her.” Tobias dropped his arm on my shoulder and looked over at Kya. “It’d be a shame if we had to kill her.”

I wanted to punch him for just suggesting that.

“I could marry her?”

Both my brothers stopped and stared at me.

“You’re serious?” Jackson cocked his head.

I shrugged. “Why not?”

I was twenty-nine. It was about time I produced an heir. Lords knows Jackson wasn’t going to step up to the plate anytime soon.

“Alright.” Jackson pushed off the wall. “Looks like we have a wedding to plan.”

Tobias and I stood there as he walked over and sat down beside Kya. He didn’t say anything, just watched her. My guess was he was trying to figure her out. Learn what he could before he dug through her background.

“Well, damn.” Bias slapped his hand on my back and shook his head. “Never thought you’d be the first to get hitched.”

And that was that. Now I was engaged to an unwilling bride. Not necessarily a problem–arranged marriages were part of our world–the groom generally didn’t give a shit if the bride was crying though.
